UAE defeat 10-man Iraq to clinch third place at Asian Cup

United Arab Emirates captain Ahmed Khalil scored on either side of half time as tournament top-scorer Al-Makhbout converted a penalty to seal third place at the Asia Cup, 3-2 ahead of Iraq.

Al-Makhbout scored the winner in the 57th minute, after he was brought down in the box by Ahmed Ibrahim, who got sent off after the tackle. It was Makhbout's fifth goal of the Asian Cup, putting him on top of the goal-scorers chart, ahead of the final in between Australia and South Korea.

2007 champions, Iraq narrowly made it into the semi-finals, after edging Iran out on penalties. The UAE on the other hand were defeated by Australia 2-0 on Tueday.

Iraq did equalise the score in the 29th minute through Waleed Salim. In fact they took the lead into the half-time break with Amjed Kalaf scoring the 42nd minute. However, it was UAE who scored two quick goals right after half time to seal the game.
