Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has hailed Mesut Ozil for the brilliant composure he showed while scoring Arsenal’s winning goal against Ludogorets. After being two goals within the first 15 minutes of the game itself, Arsenal then went on to score three unanswered goals to snatch all the points.
In the 87th minute, when the Germany international was put through on goal, he coolly got the ball over the goalkeeper before dummying his way past two onrushing defenders before finishing his beautiful piece of artistry with the end result that it deserved: a goal.
"That's the strength of the great players, they make the right decision," Wenger told BT Sport. "I thought for a while he took too long to score. But at the end of the day, when they score you have to say 'well done.'"
The beauty of the tricks the German pulled was so beautiful that even Arsene Wenger, initially, didn’t think it would work. However, he was glad to have been proven wrong.
"You know, I would say the great players make the right decisions in the game situations they face. They always make the optimal solution," Wenger later added in the press conference.
"To me, it didn't look for a while like the optimal solution, but when the ball was in the net I thought it was!”
Normally most players would have shot earlier, but the French manager believes that his crown jewel has the skills to do the glamorous.
"You wanted him to take maybe his chance earlier but at the end, he had enough skill to prove that he was right."
Wenger also spoke about the game. With two goals down, things could have been worse for the Gunners, but the former Monaco manager’s game-plan "to not panic at 2-0 down, to keep our composure and stick to our game," worked.
Le Professeur then went on to admit that his team found it difficult to cope up with the pace at the beginning, making things much difficult for them.
"Overall I believe we were surprised by the speed of their start, we were caught a bit cold," Wenger said. "Of course, in the Champions League when you're 2-0 down away from home, with the crowd behind their team, it becomes very difficult."
While asked about his goalkeeping conundrum, Wenger gave the impression that he was happy to have such a headache as he opted to David Ospina in the Champions League, once again, over Petr Cech.
"It is good that we have two excellent goalkeepers and this game proved why we need them," the Arsenal manager said.
