After a couple of close calls in the first half for the South American team, which included a strike by Mexican Andres Guardado hitting the goalpost, they took the lead in the 43rd minute. Suarez headed a Edinson Cavani cross at the far post to put the ball into the net. Uruguay gained more confidence. Diego Lugano headed a ball from point blank range to force a great save by Mexican keeper. Mexico also had a great chance when Francisco Rodriguez’s header was just wide of goal.

Mexico had to win the tie to top the group and avoid facing a deadly-looking Argentina in the next round. Uruguay did not let that happen. Even though both the teams have gone through, the highlight of the day was the bright football by South Africa.
