Rio de Janeiro, July 5 (IANS): Brazilian club Vasco da Gama has confirmed their interest in re-signing former Lyon and Brazil international midfielder Juninho.

Vasco’s executive director Ricardo Gomes said Thursday that he would meet with Juninho next week after the 38-year-old quit the New York Red Bulls Wednesday.

“We are going to talk with him when he comes back to Brazil,” Gomes said.

“Depending on the outcome of our conversation I will discuss the matter with (coach) Paulo Autuori,” reports Xinhua.

“We need to see if he is interested in playing with us and what his conditions are.”

Juninho, who played in each of Lyon’s seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles from 2002 to 2008, quit the Red Bulls after just six months at the club, citing differences with coach Mike Petke.

The free-kick specialist has said a key factor in his decision to leave Vasco in December last year was the Rio de Janeiro club’s failure to pay wages on time.
