Bradford City Fire

The Bradford City stadium fire is considered to be the worst disasters in the history of English football. It occurred on 11 May 1985 during a league match between Bradford City and Lincoln City. 56 people were killed in the incident, and at least 265 people got injured.

The fire is said to have started after a spectator dropped a match after lighting a cigarette, which fell through the holes in the stand on to rubbish which had gathered together at the bottom. It is said that the seats in the stands didn’t have risers, due to which a lot of rubbish and paper had accumulated down under. The fire began to spread to the roof and the wooden stands were soon on fire. It took less than four minutes for the entire stand to be engulfed in flames.

The wooden grandstands were soon banned and the disaster led to various other new safety standards in UK football grounds.
