Five thousand footballs were buried in the sand on Copacabana beach as part of a protest against Brazilian government spending at the World Cup on Saturday.
With demonstrators once again taking to the streets in Brazil on Saturday, a special protest took place on the famous sands of Copacabana beach.
Five thousand footballs, marked with a red cross, were buried into the sand as part of a protest against Brazilian government spending at the Confederations Cup and World Cup.
Protest organizer Antonio Carlos Costa said each ball represented the thousands of people who have been killed in violence during the last decade.
In an address to the nation on Friday, Brazil president Dilma Rousseff insisted that the costs for the tournament next year would not come out of taxpayers’ money.
Brazil is scheduled to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympic games.
Both events are believed to cost roughly US$50 billion dollars in total.
