Video: Goalkeeper's hilarious attempt to escape red card by feigning a faint

Playing the dead, are you now?

There have been a lot of red cards in football, some justified and some not so much. While one Zlatan Ibrahimovic accused Chelsea players of being ‘babies’ for their reaction prior to his red card during a Champions League match, another continental cup across the ocean witnessed what perhaps was the most absurd and equally hilarious attempt to avoid a red card.

The plot was set during a Copa Libertadores matchup between Barcelona SC from Ecuador and Atletico Nacional of Columbia. Barcelona’s Ecuadorian keeper Maximo Banguera tried to pull off a Sergio Busquets without quite managing the finesse.

The incident initiated when Atletico Nacional broke on the counter and had a clean run at the goal. Banguera decided to emulate sweeper-keeper Manuel Neuer and rush out to clear the danger.

The Ecuadorian goalkeeper missed the ball but managed to catch the Nacional player with his flailing hands.

The dreaded whistle was blown and everyone watching the game knew a red card was looming. Banguera seemed to have picked up the cue and decided to stay on the ground as if he had fainted in order to escape sending off.

Full marks for the attempt but sadly the referee was not a part of the Oscar nominee panel and decided to hand the goalkeeper a red card instead of a golden statue. Talk about a wasted performance!
