Video: Goalkeeper takes water break as opposition score from set-piece

Lifan goalkeeper Sui Weijie was drinking water when the opposition scored a goal

This surely has to be one of the most hilarious and at the same time, bewildering sequences seen on a football field. A goalkeeper in the Chinese Super League was calmly sipping water while the opposition acted smartly as they took a quick free-kick and put the ball into the empty net.

The incident happened in a Super League match between Chongqing Lifan and hosts Liaoning. The visitors were leading 1-0 when Liaoning were awarded a free-kick just outside Lifan’s penalty box. From a quickly taken set-piece, the ball found its way to Ding Haifeng, who passed the ball into the unprotected net. All this while, Lifan goalkeeper Sui Weijie was sipping water, in what seemed like a giant lapse in concentration.

Weijie was fined 50,000 yuan (£5,233) for his role, and also could potentially be banned by Lifan. He was confronted by angry supporters of his team at the airport.

The goalkeeper, however, was full of remorse over the incident and said, “I made a terrible mistake in Sunday’s game and let go a full three points. I won’t repeat the same mistake and will never lose concentration.”
