Both sides struck the crossbar early on through centre-backs Robert Huth and Kolo Toure before Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring for Liverpool with the first Premier League goal of the season. Asmir Begovic thwarted Liverpool time and time again and looked to have earned the Potters a point when Agger conceded a penalty late on. Jonathan Walters stepped up, only to miss, and Liverpool held on to take 3 points.
