Liverpool beat Manchester United 1-0 in the English Premier League.
The Reds got one over their old foes thanks to an early goal from Daniel Sturridge.
Brendan Rodgers:
“I thought the result was outstanding and defensively I thought we were very, very good. Obviously Manchester United played well I thought. I thought our concentration and our defensive qualities was outstanding today. We’ll be more fluent and as the season goes on we’ll become better but these are the big games that we wanted to be winning this year – we drew to many last year – and I think you see the togetherness and the spirit in the team. Playing against the champions, it’s always a tough game but to get the three points and get three wins out of three I can only be happy with.”
David Moyes:
“I thought we played very well. I thought from the start – maybe just the opening few minutes of the game, we gave away a bad goal but with the exception of that we played well. Probably the best we’ve played this season. Players done well.”
Brendan Rodgers (on Daniel Sturridge):
“He was nowhere near fit today. He played a full game plus extra time in the week and he had a slight knock on his thigh and this is what we’ve been speaking to him on about – just putting yourself out there. Even at 70 per cent he will be as good if not better than a lot of Premier League strikers, so you’ve got to find the will and the desire to want to push yourself and he done that today and he got his reward for it. Great anticipation coming off the keeper for the goal and always when he is on the pitch he can be a threat.”
David Moyes (on end of transfer window):
“We’ll continue working for what’s left of it to get what we can in. I’ve got to say I was really impressed with how the players played today. I tell you what I can see why they are champions – or why we are champions today. I thought they played really well today. We just didn’t quite have the last bit to score – so as far as transfers go, you’ve only got I don’t know how many hours to go, but not too long to wait.”
