When tiny Gibraltar faced world champions Germany, a thumping was almost a foregone conclusion. And Germany made up for their defeat against the USA with a 7-0 thumping of Gibraltar.
But one Gibraltar player who came out of the mauling with his reputation intact was their goalkeeper Jordan Perez who pulled out some brilliant saves to limit the damage. One of his best saves of the night was when he dived down to save Bastian Schweinsteiger’s penalty. He also made many more saves on the night, some really brilliant ones to keep the score to seven.
It’s interesting to note that Jordan Perez is a firefighter for the City Fire Brigade Gibraltar when he is not playing football. At times it looked the fireman was waging a lonely battle against the world’s best team. And Perez is a hero who serves his country both on and off the pitch.
