#3 Mistakes by Emery
This video mirrors my thoughts on Emery's plan today:
Unai Emery has done some good things at Arsenal this season.
He has shown more tactical flexibility lately, vis a vis the latter Wenger period. This has borne fruit, in getting wins over Tottenham for one. He also has sought a harder mentality of the team, and has been unafraid to bench players who have not been contributing to his philosophy or impact, or the desired work ethic.
However, today, this flexibility cost Arsenal. Lucas Torreira, the addition from Sampdoria in the summer, was curiously omitted and placed on the bench. Moreover, when he came on, Arsenal looked more resolute, which was a baffling decision overall.
The formation also could be called into question, as Emery opted for three at the back over a back four.
The players must also take responsibility, but the manager always sets the tone, and he ultimately instills the mentality, team tone, and tactics. In this game, Emery set Arsenal on a negative path, which ultimately cost them the game here.
Arsenal are at home to Chelsea next, and it's imperative that they do not lose. If they do, then Champions League qualification via the league could be over.
