Transfer Rumour: West Ham in pole position to land Daniel Sturridge

Sturridge isn’t a certainty in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI

Daniel Sturridge has seen a massive fall in grace, and especially down the pecking order at Liverpool. The form of Philipe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane has forced the English striker to just 4 starts under Jürgen Klopp.

Tottenham were thought to be front-runners, along with the likes of Stoke City and AC Milan, but all the signals point at West Ham signing the 27-year-old talisman in January.

With Simone Zaza not living up to the potential and possibly facing a switch to Valencia and repeated failed bids for Carlos Bacca has forced Slaven Bilic into shelling out £25 million for the English striker. Klopp wouldn’t mind as it would open up the possibility of making fresh new signings in the winter to bolster the squad for what will be a heavy title challenge.

However, Klopp might find himself in an unforeseen predicament, where he will need to shuffle things up and bring on the likes of Sturridge, who could do wonders for the team from the bench. The player has been in good goal-scoring form for England, despite being blamed along with Rooney for the team’s poor pressing. The striker will, however, be keen to show the boss that he is still useful in all types of situations, and should be pressing for a move away from Merseyside.

There have also been rumours that Tottenham are interested in bringing the former Chelsea man to the club. If he does indeed move to Spurs, Sturridge would be fighting for a spot with Harry Kane and summer signing Vincent Janssen.

More recently, Stoke were also linked with the striker, but Stoke chairman Peter Coates spoke to BBC Radio and dismissed The Mirror’s report.

“No, it’s not (true). But that’s how the media works, there are always lots of headlines and pieces like that with players and other clubs and it goes on. He is a fine player, I like him very much, so who knows in football, it is an uncertain business where you get a lot of surprises.”

A player of Sturridge’s calibre will certainly have several clubs lining up to sign him and January will be a busy month for the Englishman.
