Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool finds themselves on the top of the Premier League table in January after their best ever start to an English Premier League season. A recent narrow 2-1 lost to title rivals Manchester City exposed some cracks in this Liverpool team. Cracks that have been exposed in both Europe and the domestic cup competitions.

What can Liverpool do within this January transfer window that can ensure the red side of Merseyside win their first ever Premier League title and their first English top-flight league title in almost 30 years? The following are some of the players that could come in and give Liverpool the edge they need as they attempt to hold off a record-breaking Manchester City outfit.

#5 Timo Werner

The German attacker's contract-indecisiveness has many to believe he will soon be on his way out of RB Leipzig. While he has already expressed his admiration for European powerhouse Bayern Munich, Jurgen Klopp's German influence might be enough to convince the 22-year-old that Liverpool is the better option.

Liverpool's lack of options in the centre forward position and the sale of young Dominic Solanke means there is a slot in the team for a striker. Werner who started all of Germany's games at the World Cup is a player that can play Klopp's brand of football easily. He is diminutive, technical and is comfortable playing anywhere in the front three.

He has already registered two twenty-plus-goal seasons in his career and is well on his way to a third this season. Liverpool and RB Leipzig recently conducted business as Klopp managed to prise the midfield general Naby Keita away from the German club.

#4 Éder Militão

With Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez, Joël Matip all out injured and Nathaniel Clyne departing to Bournemouth Liverpool are a bit thin in both the centre back and right back areas. So much so that 16-year-old Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever was given his debut at the club.

In Eder Militao, who is only 20, you have an athletic centre back who has already made his debut for the Brazilian national team. His one cap for Brazil was a 90 minute run out at the right back position showing his ability to play that role as well.

With fellow Brazilians Alisson, Fabinho and Firmino already at the club, Militao should have no problem adapting. With Porto still in the final stages of the Champions League, the Portuguese champions will be very hesitant to part with their starting central defender.

#3 Thorgan Hazard

The former Chelsea player is often overshadowed by the phenom-like ability of his older brother Eden. But Thorgan is a quality player in his own right. He has made the Borussia Moenchengladbach team his own and is their key player.

Part of the Belgium national team at the 2018 World Cup, Thorgan is a dangerous attacking winger who can definitely add to the depth of this Liverpool team.

Capable with set pieces and penalties, Thorgan can benefit from continuing his footballing education in England. Chelsea has recently waived a clause in his contract to match any offer which may indicate that a move is on the horizon.

The player is also strongly linked to Borussia Dortmund where he would reunite with his former coach Lucien Favre as a replacement for the outgoing Christian Pulisic. But with Pulisic only joining Chelsea in the summer that particular move might have to wait for the next window.

#2 James Tarkowski

Burnley v Barnsley - FA Cup Third Round

Trying to address the aforementioned defensive concerns could be a reason to consider the addition of English international James Tarkowski. With Burnley currently in a relegation battle, it will be difficult for them to sell.

But with a chance of winning the Premier League on the other end, Tarkowski can apply the necessary pressure and force the sale if the fee is right and a replacement can be had.

Tarkowski has been in and out of Gareth Southgate's England teams and the pedigree of Burnley might be a reason for his inconsistent selection. A move to one of England's best in Liverpool will see him have a better chance to be included in future England squads with more certainty.

With Holland captain Virgil Van Dijk playing every minute of every game in the Premier League this season Liverpool should prepare for a potential injury to the Dutch superstar who they in fact signed last January transfer window. What a decision that turned out to be.

#1 Amine Harit

Morocco v Iran: Group B - 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia
Morocco v Iran: Group B - 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia

Last season's Bundesliga Rookie of the Year is a former French youth international who is a constant pest for opposition defences. Harit, who now plays international football for Morocco, could be a suitable understudy to recently crowned African Footballer of Year Mohamed Salah.

Always a willing runner at just 21 years old he is a player that has all the potential to flourish within the Gegenpressing system that sees Liverpool on top of the English Premier League table.

Last season he was particularly impressive, his performances at times made him irresistible forcing Morocco head coach Hervé Renard to start him in the opening World Cup game against Iran. In the 2017-2018 season, no other Bundesliga player dribbled passed more players than Harit. Fouling him seemed the only way to stop him as he was also the most fouled player in the German top flight.
