Will Victor Wanyama be a good buy for Manchester United?

His name has been propping up recently in the news. Who is this Victor Wanyama? For a normal person, he is a footballer from Kenya. For a footballing enthusiast, he is a tough tackling 21-year-old, multi talented young defensive midfielder playing for Celtic. He joined Celtic in 2011 for £900,000 and has matured from then on. He has become a hit in Celtic Park due to his robustness and consistency. His performances have attracted attention from clubs including Manchester United and neighbors City. Celtic would command as much as £10 million for the highly rated midfielder.

United are on high alert after Wanyama’s agent claimed that the youngster rejected an improved offer from Celtic, with his present contract ending on 2015. Sir Alex was already tracking the youngster during the summer but failed to sign him. He will look to pounce on this opportunity and get the youngster who will do wonders at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex has reinforced the midfield with the likes of Shinji Kagawa, Tom Cleverly and the returning Darren Fletcher. But Manchester United have not had a tough tackling defensive midfielder since Roy Keane and Wanyama fits the bill and the requirement of Sir Alex. He also has the option of Kevin Strootman, the Dutch midfielder who plays for PSV Eindhoven. He is more of a box to box midfielder and now plays as a deep lying midfielder after the arrival of Mark Van Bommel.

Victor Wanyama can also play as a make-shift center back which United may require, given their injury concerns over the last two seasons. Micheal Carrick has been doing an exceptional job by sitting just in front of the back, but the Englishman is the only option that the Red Devils can bank on at the moment. It is time that they look ahead and start looking for reinforcements just in case. Wanyama looks like an advanced version of Carrick with enhanced tackling ability.

The 21-year-old can also build on his ability to play long balls under the able guidance of Paul Scholes and Carrick. He is a player with the unusual combination of strength and calmness that can be found rarely in midfielders. He is just the right person to the do the engine work for United. Wanyama also proved that he is capable of shooting from long range with the four goals that he has scored for Celtic during 2011-12 season. He also boasts of exceptional ball control under pressure. Just what the Red devils need to complete the jigsaw.
