Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has admitted that winning La Decima, Real Madrid’s tenth European Cup, was even better than his triumph in Istanbul for Liverpool in 2005.

The Spaniard was suspended for Madrid’s Champions League win over rivals Atletico on Saturday, but he played a big part in helping the Los Blancos reach the final in Lisbon.

Alonso watched from the touchline alongside his Madrid team-mates and was delirious when Ancelotti’s men managed to grab the equaliser, and then the winning goals.

Alonso was also part of the famous Liverpool side which defeated Carlo Ancelotti’s AC Milan side in 2005. The Reds were 3-0 down in Istanbul before they went completed a remarkable second-half turnaround and went on to win the game on penalties.

Alonso however, admitted that Madrid’s triumph on Saturday was even better than Istanbul.

Alonso told reporters: “Winning La Decima was better than Istanbul 2005.”

Alonso’s future has been under intense scrutiny, despite signing a new contract recently for the Los Blancos. Alonso has been heavily linked with a return to Liverpool, but he has quashed speculation many times this season.
