Zidane annnced on July 7, 2011 that he has been named as Real Madrid's new sporting director for next season.

Former Real Madrid player and current assistant manager, Zinedine Zidane, has claimed that he could not possibly have worked as assistant under Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho left for Chelsea in the summer which allowed the club to hire Carlo Ancelotti as manager, who promptly brought in Zidane as his assistant.

The former French international, who won the World Cup, was sporting director under Mourinho but he believes he could not have worked directly under Mourinho.

Speaking to Canal+, Zidane said: “With Ancelotti, it’s all happened quite naturally. I spoke to him a few days before he joined and he sorted everything out.

“That was a good moment for me, for him and for the club.

“I wouldn’t have been able to take on that role with a coach I didn’t know. I could never have been Mourinho’s assistant, for example.

“And besides, he already had an assistant. It wouldn’t have been right to take on the job of being his right-hand man.”

Zidane won La Liga and the Champions League as a player at Real Madrid and is now aiming for the club’s 10th European crown while on the coaching staff.
