Zinedine Zidane reveals Real Madrid's interest in Raheem Sterling

Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling being watched by Real Madrid

Former France midfielder Zinedine Zidane has admitted that Real Madrid are monitoring Raheem Sterling’s situation at Liverpool closely and they are keeping tabs on his contractual developments.

The 20-year-old’s future at Anfield is uncertain as he is yet to confirm his commitment to the Reds by extending his contract which is set to expire in 2017. Sterling also grabbed the headlines last week after his interview with BBC Sport where he mentioned that he does not want people to think that he is a “money-grabbing 20-year-old.”

And Zidane, who is currently coaching Real Madrid’s Castilla B-team, has admitted that Los Blancos are looking at the England international as a potential future transfer prospect and that he is one of the several players who are on the radar of the Spanish giants.

“We know who Raheem Sterling is, and of course we are monitoring him as a player,” the 1998 World Cup winner said.

“There are very few players in the world who can improve the Real Madrid squad, so it is going to make sense we monitor the progress of the best young players in the world. We monitored [Gareth] Bale for over a year, the same with Isco and also [Raphaël] Varane.

“We monitor many of the best young players in Europe, then if we feel they have something to offer Real Madrid we will contact their club and try and make the next step,” he concluded.
