What's the story?

Lionel Messi is one of the most popular footballers in the world and with FIFA 18 Career Mode, you can build your own team of football stars provided you have the money to show for it.

A player of Messi's calibre will not be cheap. But somebody, with a bit of tinkering, figured out how to rope in the Argentinian for free.

In case you didn't know

Earlier, another Youtuber figured out how to sign Cristiano Ronaldo for Barcelona. Yet another one figured out how to sign Neymar to Real Madrid. So it was almost inevitable that a video involving Messi would be coming out soon.

The heart of the matter

YouTuber BMOnus reveals to do it, you’re going to need to use something called the pre-contract trick. This means you essentially make an agreement with a player to join your club while they are still serving out their current contract. Using your negotiation skills, you don’t need to pay the parent club any money.

This trick is much easier if you have the 60 percent transfer budget increase on your Career Mode campaign. Having one of the big teams – Manchester United, Liverpool or any of the front-runners in the Premier League is a bonus.

However, it works for smaller teams too, BMOnus selected newly-promoted Brighton and Hove Albion as his team. They have a budget of just £27million. First, head into your club’s finances and tweak the figures, so your wage budget is around £500k. Next, look up Messi and you’ll see his contract is expiring in 12 months. Add him to the shortlist and play out the rest of your season.

Now, it’s imperative that you keep these funds until the January window – so don’t spend anything! Then, it’s on to the negotiation. The key thing here is to agree with everything the player wants. Messi’s agent will ask for around £430,000 a week – slightly less than what he was getting at Barca. However, there’s a big signing bonus of £4,250,000 and a near £10m fee after 20 appearances.
