10 swing thoughts from the best tour players

Rory McIlroy

“Thinking about trying to make good contact always. Choosing a spot in front of the ball and then hit over it. I try to take everything else out and de-clutter my mind. I try and stay committed to the process and not think too much about the outcome.”

Rafael Cabrera Bello

“I think about the target and try and feel comfortable over the ball. I try and focus on my stance and align properly to where I want to hit. I let the brain do the rest and let the swing happen. My main focus is on staying target-oriented.”

Mathew Fitzpatrick

“I try and concentrate on a certain feeling in my backswing or on reaching a certain position on the top of my backswing. I see which way the wind is blowing, select the right club, take two practice swings and go from there. I”m not one to take forever over the ball before I hit it.”

Rickie Fowler

“For me, golf is about feel and swinging free, like you couldn't care less about your results. I know that might be hard to accept, especially if you've been struggling to hit the ball straight or have contact issues, but hear me out. When you're able to build trust in what you're doing and simply "let it go," power creeps into your swing as if by magic.”

Jordan Spieth

“I focus on my basics-get my setup, posture & alignment right when I’m on the range. I do a few waggles while talking to Michael(his caddie) about the shot. Visualise the shot, I try and picturise it and back-track to a time when I hit a similar shot on the driving range or on the course. Recently I’ve been focussing on rolling the face open as I load up in my backswing and not focus on the pressure of the situation.”

Lydia Ko

“I always try and follow ‘KISS’- Keep it simple, stupid. I try and not over-complicate it but sometimes it’s hard thinking about not thinking anything. I try and work on keeping the swing simple and how to make it more efficient.”

Anirban Lahiri

“I try and focus on my visualisation-try and see the putt fall if it’s putting or I try to visualise the shape of a shot and how it lands when it’s a full shot. I try to dis-associate from the shot & focus on what to do. I trust my gut, pick targets and commit to every shot. Being aware of my breath helps me get away from negativity and come back to the present. It’s something that works at all levels.”

Patrick Reed

“ I try to pick a very small target usually. My eyes like to wander so if I look at a big target, I tend to see a lot around it. So, if I’m looking at a small target, the main thing is to decide on the club depending on what sort of shot and shape I want to hit. I try to pick a conservative line but an aggressive golf swing and try to hit my shot towards the target rather than go at the flags. It takes the circumstances, whether it’s the wind or I’m up by one shot, out of the equation if I find my spot and zero in on my target.”

Sergio Garcia

“For me, it’s important to always keep my height at address as well as through the swing. I get in trouble when I dig a little bit down and lose room to swing freely. My lag is a unique thing and is a part of my motion, it’s something that cannot really be taught. I try to feel like I’m pulling a chain down at the start of my backswing which enables me to keep the club in front and let the body follow.”

Graeme McDowell

“To avoid a hook, my takeaway thought is to make sure during those first three feet the clubhead works away wide and outside my hands, with a nice bit of loft on the club.”

“You turn off your mind. You feel your golf swing without really thinking about it. It’s almost like you don’t think at all. Maybe you have one little thought, and everything else becomes automatic.”
