On Thursday, June 12, some of the best golfers in the world will tee off at Oakmont Country Club for the 2025 US Open, the third major championship of the year. Xander Schauffele, who will tee off in the event, revealed that fans enjoy the tournament because they like seeing players “suffer” on the course. Fans online have reacted to the American golfer’s statement, saying that he is right.

Schauffele turned pro in 2015 and has won nine events on the PGA Tour since then. He secured his maiden PGA Tour title in the 2017 Greenbrier Classic and also won the Tour Championship that same year. He has two major championship titles under his belt and will attempt to add a third major trophy to his trophy cabinet at the 2025 US Open.

In a press conference ahead of the tournament, Xander Schauffele stated that fans are looking forward to seeing golfers being put to the test at Oakmont’s rough setup.

“I don't think people turn the TV on to watch some of the guys just hit like a 200-yard shot on the green, you know what I mean? I think they turn on the U.S. Open to see a guy shooting 8-over & suffer. That's part of the enjoyment of playing in the U.S. Open for viewers.”

Take a look at NUCLR Golf’s tweet quoting Schauffele:

Another fan on X commented:

“Xander is right. My favourite golf tournament to watch is the US Open. I love watching professional golfers suffer like the rest of us golfers do 😎”

Another fan added:

“I am a new fan of Xander. He is exactly right and they have been so soft with setups. I hope this is a train wreck and the ratings are through the roof!”

One user remarked:

“I want to see everyone shoot over par.”

Another user went as far as painting a vivid picture of “tears” and chaos, wishing that the winner would score 3-over.

“He’s right. I want absolute chaos. I want tears, club snaps, Jon Rahm yelling explicative words, wife’s not coming to the course and bringing the playerskids so they don’t have to see dad struggle. I want them to hate the place. I want +3 winning. A cut line at +8. Give it to me.”

Notably, this year’s tournament will be the 125th edition of the US Open. Last year, golfers competed for a share in the total prize purse of $21.5 million, and a similar prize money is expected this year.
