Patrick Cantlay is gearing up to compete in the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The tournament will be held at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, USA.
The top 70 players have qualified for the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Cantlay comfortably qualified after he finished 11th in the FedExCup standings, with Scottie Scheffler and Xander Scahuffele occupying the top two spots on the leaderboard.
In the pre-tournament press conference, Cantlay was asked which 'historic year' he'd prefer for himself between Scheffler's and Schauffele's. He said (via ASAP Sports):
"I'm sure a lot of people start to ask themselves that when voting comes for Player of the Year, so I think some of it will be decided by how they play these next three weeks. But Scottie has played unbelievable golf. With the amount of tournament wins he's had, it's just been super impressive."
Scheffler has had seven wins this year with six of them on the PGA Tour including a Major. He won the Masters tournament for the second time this year by four strokes over Ludvig Aberg. He recently won the Gold Medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics after a sensational fourth-round finish at Le Golf National.
Meanwhile, Schauffele had two wins this year with both of them at Majors. He won the PGA Championship by one stroke over Bryson DeChambeau and the Open Championship by two strokes over Justin Rose.
Patrick Cantlay was further asked if it would bother him if Scheffler and Schauffele didn't perform well at the upcoming tournaments, to which he said:
"Yeah, that wouldn't bother me."
Cantlay will be seen playing competitive golf after three weeks. He last played in the Open Championship at Royal Troon. On asked how he spent his last three weeks, the 32-year-old said:
"I practiced a lot. I was back in Jupiter, and it was nice to be home for a few weeks. Just gearing up for the Playoffs."
Patrick Cantlay has fared relatively well at the TPC Southwind. Last year, he finished as a runner-up after he lost in playoffs against Lucas Grover with a par on the first extra hole. In 2022, he finished tied at 57th, whereas in 2021 he finished tied at 11th.
