What happens to The Open Championship’s $3,100,000 winner's prize if an amateur wins it?

The Open Championship welcomes 12 amateurs to play at Royal Troon but the bad news is that they won't receive any prize money even if they win or make it through the cutline. The prize for the winner is $3.1 million but that won't be credited to an amateur if he manages to win.

While the amateur won't bag any hefty prize money, there'll be other incentives. Introduced in 1949, the low amateur receives a silver medal and the winner will get a gold medal. Added to these, a perfect performance will help in publicity and to get exemptions in future tournaments. Also, this may help in getting sponsors after the golfer turns pro.

In the 2023 Open Championship, Christo Lamprecht clinched the silver medal. He ended up at T74 on the leaderboard. Other amateurs who participated were Jose Luis Ballester, Harrison Crowe, Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira, Tiger Christensen, and more. Now, the question remains how do these golfers qualify for the Open Championship?

Amateurs can play in the Open Championship if they hold titles like the Amateur, US Amateur, Asia Pacific Amateur, European Amateur, and more. This year the amateurs in the Open Championship are Dominic Clemons, Santiago de la Fuente, Matthew Dodd-Berry, Jaime Montojo Fernandez, Luis Masaveu, Liam Nolan, Jacob Skov Olesen, Gordon Sargent, Jasper Stubbs, Altin van der Merwe, Tommy Morrison, and Calum Scott.
