Lucas Herbert carded a bogey-free first round in the Australian Open with an eagle and six birdies. Herbert is looking for his fourth win on the DP World Tour and his first at his home Open.
Herbert's first-round eight-under 63 left him just one shot off the course record at Kingston Heath Golf Club (62). The record has been held by Kiwi Mark Brown since 2013.
Despite his excellent performance, Herbert was not satisfied with the level of golf he played in the first round of the Australian Open. He was quoted as saying to the DP World Tour News Service:
"I felt like there were a lot of shots left out there. I feel like that with every round of golf, to be fair, but didn't really think I holed that many putts. Just hit it quite nicely, got it into the right spots.Probably got a couple of lucky breaks here and there where shots that maybe weren't the best didn't get punished the way they could have."
Top local player Cameron Smith carded eight birdies and two bogeys in the first round of the Australian Open. Smith was 1 under through 13 but birdied the last five holes in a row to finish tied for fourth.
