Why was Shane Lowry penalised at the US Open 2025, Round 2?

Shane Lowry missed the cut in the 2025 US Open after scoring 17-over-157 across 36 holes. During his second round, he forgot to mark his ball before picking it up and was penalized for it.

Lowry was chasing his first US Open title and second major championship title at Oakmont Country Club. He won his first major in 2019 at the Open Championship and placed second in the 2016 US Open.

During the second round of the 2025 US Open, the 38-year-old golfer shot his ball onto the green on the par-4 14th hole. However, he was penalized with one stroke for failing to mark it and ended up with a double bogey on the hole.

Shane Lowry had a frustrating run at Oakmont this year. During his first round, he shot five bogeys and three double bogeys to card 9-over 79. On day two, he was aiming for par on the par-5 fourth hole, but shot the ball past the hole, narrowly missing the putt and making a bogey instead. Frustrated, he could be heard saying:

“F*ck this place, f*ck this place.”

At the end of his second round, Shane Lowry had shot five bogeys, two double bogeys, and one birdie, placing him at T134.

Notably, Sam Burns is currently at the top of the leaderboard with 3-under 137. J.J. Spaun, who was in the lead after day one, is now in second place with 2-under 138.
