Spam also lacks most vitamins and minerals found in other foods because it doesn't require much nutrition to be preserved for long periods of time. For example:

  • Spam has no vitamin A or C at all!
  • It has very little calcium compared with other meats like chicken breast or turkey breast which have about twice as much per serving size (4 oz).

Spam is a processed meat product made from pork, ham, and salt. It is canned in metal tins and preserved by means of heat treatment, which can result in the growth of harmful bacteria such as clostridium botulinum (the bacteria that causes botulism), listeria monocytogenes (a type of food poisoning), staphylococcus aureus (a cause of staph infections), salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (another type of food poisoning) and Escherichia coli 0157:H7.


May Be a Determinant of Heart Disease Risk

As you might expect from its name, spam is high in sodium. A single serving (1/2 cup) of canned meat contains 710 milligrams of sodium. That's more than half your recommended daily allowance (RDA).

Spam is also very high in fat, especially saturated fat, and cholesterol: each serving has 7 grams of saturated fat plus 65 mg cholesterol! Both these nutrients are known contributors to heart disease when consumed beyond the recommended amounts.


Is Spam Healthy For You?

The bottom line is that spam is not a healthy food choice. It's high in sodium and saturated fat, which can lead to cardiovascular disease. While it may be low in carbohydrates, its protein content can cause kidney problems and increased blood pressure if consumed regularly.
