Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares has been fined $5,000 for slashing Edmonton Oilers defenseman Vincent Desharnais. The incident occurred during NHL Game No. 1,043 in Toronto on Saturday, March 11th, according to the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety.

Despite the incident, Tavares had a productive night, scoring two goals in his team's 7-4 victory over the Oilers.

The incident took place at 3:41 of the third period when Tavares swung his stick and made contact with Desharnais. The incident resulted in a minor penalty for slashing, and the Department of Player Safety reviewed the incident and determined that disciplinary action was necessary.

Under the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, $5,000 is the maximum allowable fine for this type of infraction. The money collected from the fine will be donated to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund, which provides financial assistance to players in need.

Tavares, who is the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, is a highly skilled and respected player in the NHL. He has been a consistent performer throughout his career and is known for his leadership both on and off the ice.

This is not the first time that Tavares has faced disciplinary action from the NHL. In 2015, he was suspended for two games for a high hit on New York Islanders defenseman Thomas Hickey.

While slashing is a common penalty in hockey, the NHL takes a strong stance on unnecessary and dangerous actions on the ice. The Department of Player Safety is responsible for reviewing on-ice incidents and determining appropriate disciplinary action for players who violate league rules.

Tavares will now have to pay the fine and move on from the incident. The Toronto Maple Leafs will continue their season, hoping to secure a playoff spot and make a run at the Stanley Cup.
