The Airtel I-League will head into a seven-week break after the coming weekend and Sportskeeda starts the mid-season review by listing the top five foreign signings so far. The list is not in any particular order.

Cornell Glen (Shillong Lajong)

Several high-profile foreigners have arrived in this season’s I-League with Glen possibly being the most notable addition as he made three appearances for Trinidad & Tobago in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. The 33-year-old bagged a brace on his debut against Dempo and hasn’t looked back ever since as he has scored eight of Lajong’s 18 goals so far with the third best minutes-per-goal ratio in the league. The Shillong club are currently fourth and it is largely due to the consistency of Glen.

John Johnson (Bengaluru FC)

bengaluru

The former EPL defender has been instrumental in Bengaluru’s dream debut campaign so far as he has not only been influential at the back but also contributed with three goals. Along with Kenyan Curtis Osano, Johnson has formed the best central defensive pairing of this I-League and that has been the key for Ashley Westwood’s young squad. There haven’t been too many technically better defenders than Johnson in I-League history and Bengaluru FC fans would be hoping that the former Middlesbrough defender has an equally good second half of the season also.

Calum Angus (Pune FC)

Angus is another foreigner who came with a big reputation as he was last playing in the Swedish top flight and so far the former Portsmouth youth player hasn’t disappointed. The central defender is highly responsible for Pune having the best defensive record and he also contributes going forward thanks to his ability of taking freekicks and corners. The 27-year-old incredibly won the man-of-the match award in his first five matches and Pune’s title challenge will depend heavily on the Englishman’s form and fitness.

John Menyongar (Bengaluru FC)

menyongar

The former Liberian international has featured in every minute of Bengaluru’s 14 games and proved to be a class act in the middle of the park. Operating as a deep-lying playmaker, Menyongar’s experience has been a calming influence on Bengaluru’s young midfielders. Bengaluru’s style of play has impressed many and most of their attacks are built through the former Lajong and Dempo player. Menyongar has also scored two vital goals and become indispensable to his club.

Josimar (Mohammedan Sporting)

josimar

The Brazilian has always been one of the most underrated foreigners in Indian football as he is not the most skillful player but none can question his goal scoring record. Josimar is not only the current top scorer in the league with nine but also has the best minutes-per-goal ratio. Without his goals Mohammedan Sporting would possibly be rock-bottom as the Kolkata club have managed only 13 overall. Mohammedan could still be involved in a relegation fight but they should be safe if Josimar stays injury free.
