Commentary

That brings us to the end of our coverage from the Ultimate Test. What a win for Australia and commiserations to India but they didn't deserve to win this trophy. Pat Cummins being presented with the Test mace as the Australian team rejoice another ICC trophy win. What a dominating show from the Aussies and now it's time to pose for the photographs. It's celebration time for the Men from Down Under.

Pat Cummins (Australia captain): We made the most of it. We were certainly going to have a bowl but the way Travis and Smithy batted was great. (On Head) He's been great throughout this campaign right from the start of the Ashes. He has put pressure back on the bowlers. We left Day 1 feeling we were on top of the game mainly thanks to those two guys. When accounted we played really well. I thought a couple of days ago we could have really driven the game home. Didn't have our best day and let India back in but most of the game we played really well. Fantastic (bowling unit). Scotty Boland, he's like my favorite player. Everyone did their role really well coming from a bit of a break. (Workout done ahead of the Ashes?) For sure. Everyone has had slightly different preparation. We'll savor this for a few days before we turn our attention. (On the magnitude of the WTC) It's huge. For everyone in the change room it's our favorite format. This is the format which when you win gives you the most satisfaction.

Rohit Sharma (India captain): It was a tough one. We started well by winning the toss and putting them to bat on those conditions. We bowled pretty well in the 1st session but let ourselves down with the way we bowled. We have to give credit to Travis Head and Smith. That took us off guard. We put up a good show, we fought hard but well done Australia. We spoke of a lot of things We spoke about bowling tighter lines but it just didn’t work out. You have to stay in the game for five days but things didn’t go our way. It was a great comeback from both Rahane and Shardul. They put up a good partnership there and kept us in the game. We bowled well in the 2nd innings. We failed with the bat, we didn’t apply ourselves. The pitch was very good all through the five days but we batted poorly. Playing two finals is a good achievement for us but you cannot take the credit away for what have you done in the two years. It’s been unfortunate that we couldn’t quite go on and win the final but we will keep our heads high. All five days different people have come to the stadium. From the management, I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart. The crowd at the Oval was fantastic.

Steve Smith: It's a great achievement for this group. We've played some really good cricket to get to this situation and play a final against India who have also been great in the last two years. And I think we played nicely. On the first day we got into a really good position - Trav obviously played really well and I played second fiddle. All throughout it felt like we were in reasonable control. We know how good Virat is, he's an exceptional player. Particularly chasing totals he's very dangerous. I thought Scott Boland was outstanding this morning. For him to take the edge and the catch to stick nicely in my hands was really nice. To get Jadeja out in the same over was really nice.

Scott Boland: It was good fun. Nice to come here and put in a really good performance. (On what his plans were) Hit similar areas all the time. There was a bit of extra bounce outside off and we tried to exploit that. Felt pretty good to get him out. To get two in the over was nice. I have been playing state cricket for Victoria for 12 years. Have done a bit of hard work and good to get a few wickets. Really looking forward to it (the Ashes).

Mitchell Starc: Yeah a bit surprised. They are a quality line up. You need those rub off the green. Great catch by Smith to get Kohli at that time was very important for us. The way he played in the 1st innings, we knew we couldn’t put off the gas. We kept bowling in the right areas and managed to keep it very tight. This group has been fantastic the way they have played in the last 2 years. We had set some goals for ourselves, obviously winning in India was one which we couldn’t achieve but very proud of this team. Both teams are very familiar to each other. Two quality sides and a very good Test match. We are gonna enjoy this moment.

Travis Head, Player of the Match: It is great to obviously come here and win. Lots of hard work put in. That has been the approach for two years I guess. I wanted to be proactive. I was tested throughout the innings and nice to be out there for a period with Smudge. Was an amazing week. (On Smith) Amazing Test for him. Hopefully it is a big couple of months for him. Nice to spend some time out in the middle with him. I have always had the confidence. it is about going out there and expressing it. It took some time. Have always been open to change and to learn. I have developed some sort of a blueprint and it is nice that it worked out in such a big game.

Australia wins the World Test Championship. What an exceptional performance this has been from Australia. This was the only trophy which was missing from their cabinet and finally, they have achieved what has eluded them. India has a lot to ponder on their performance. They surrendered the ascendancy in the first day itself and had to play catch-up all through the game.

They looked dead and buried at one stage before Rahane and Shardul Thakur bailed them out of trouble to take them to a score of 296. Australia batted brilliantly yet again in the 2nd innings and gave India an unrealistic target of 444. India came into the final day with hopes of a record run chase still alive but some poor shots from Kohli and Rahane allowed Australia to keep the pressure going and in the end, they were skittled out for just 234, handing Australia a 209-run victory.

It was the Indian captain Rohit Sharma who won the loss and put the Aussies in under overcast seaming conditions. Australia lost Usman Khawaja early to a peach of a delivery from Siraj but Warner and Labuschagne forged a good partnership before Warneer's departure. Labsuchange was dismissed just after lunch on Day 1 by Mohammed Shami but the rest of the day it was all Australia as they nearly batted India out of the game on Day 1 itself.

Travis Head and Steve Smith racked up incredible centuries as Australia piled on a mammoth 469 on the board. Head's counter-attacking approach turned the game on it's head as the Indian bowlers didn't find a way to claw their way back in the game. The bowlers looked rusty especially Umesh Yadav which didn't help the other bowlers. A score of 469 was always going to be a huge challenge for India but they had the batters to get the job done.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill came out with a positive frame of mind and struck some exquisite shots but both departed at crucial junctures to leave India reeling at 30/2. Kohli then got a snorter from Starc before Pujara had shouldered arms to an incoming delivery from Green. Rahane then stitched a vital partnership with Ravindra Jadeja and just when it looked the dup will take them to stumps on Day 2m Nathan Lyon induced a false shot from Ravindra Jadeja and accounted for his wicket.

Day 3 morning belonged to India as Rahane and Shardul Thakur forged a century partnership to get India back in the game. Both batted superbly and played with intent when it mattered the most. It was Cameron Green's stunner at backward point which sent back Rahane before Shardul went for a heave only to edge one straight to Alex Carey. India was eventually bowled out for 296, handing Australia a massive lead of 173 runs.

India bowled well in the 2nd innings but with the lead in excess of 170, India needed to produce something special and bowl them out for around 150. Despite hitting the right areas, it didn't transpire the way India would have wanted as Australia piled up a huge score of 270 runs led by a brilliant half-century from Alex Carey. A lead of 444 runs was always going to be a massive task for India but the start provided by Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill led to thoughts of an incredible run chase.

The controversial wicket of Gill had the commentators divided on whether the catch of Green was taken cleanly. Rohit and Pujara batted well and shared a fifty-run stand before both played poor shots to leave India reeling at 92/3. From there on Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane stitched a good stand to ensure India ended Day 4 without any further loss. Day 5 didn't turn out the way India would have hoped for.

Kohli played a very ordinary shot of Scott Boland and Ravindra Jadeja followed suit which left India dazed. KS Bharat and Ajinkya Rahane looked good during their partnership but one Rahane fell, it was all too easy for the Aussies. Shardul was trapped in front by Nathan Lyon before Starc bounced out Umesh Yadav. Mohammed Shami had some fun with a couple of boundaries but it was an attempted reverse sweep from Mohammed Siraj which meant Australia were crowned the World Test Champions.
