Commentary

Well, then. It's England who move to the top spot in their group after winning their opening encounter. Of course, the big clash between India and Pakistan comes along tomorrow. For now, there's still plenty of cricket coming your way since it's a double-header! The defending champions, Australia, take on their Trans-Tasman rivals, New Zealand in the second game of the way. Heather Knight (England captain): Pretty pleased with the way they went about. The way Matthews was batting definitely put some pressure on us. We weren't at the best with the ball but with the bat, it was exactly what we wanted to do. Great to get the win. (Brand of cricket) We want to take the game on and entertain. We've got the depth and smarts in the middle to adapt if we need to, but we want to try and take the game on. Today was a big step to keep the mindset going. It's a lovely blend (youth and experience). It's a real positivity and they just go out there to play their shots. In big competitions, you have to know how to deal with different things that are thrown at you.

Hayley Matthews (West Indies captain): When we were batting in the middle, we thought we could get to 145-150. We got a decent start but weren't able to capitalize on it. Today was about getting in early and getting the team off to a good start. Would have been nice to carry on but good to get in the middle. She (Taylor) didn't contribute the way she wanted to but the experience she brings is so important. We're backing her all the way. (Next game) It's a World Cup. Every match is important. We need to get some points on the board and hopefully, can do better in the next game.

Nat Sciver-Brunt, player of the match: It was a bit tricky in the beginning. The pitch did hold up a tad. Happy to have received this. We did well. We wanted to be aggressive with the bat in hand, and luckily we managed to pull it off. Got to take the team over the line. Our approach is going to be the same even as the games come thick and fast. We are ready to take our opponents on.

England promised to play a free-flowing and aggressive brand of cricket coming into this tournament and they've delivered on that promise in their opening contest. It was a win set up by the bowlers in the second half of the first innings, pegging West Indies back for a below-par total on a surface that played out quite well for the batters. In reply, it was a matter of when rather than if for England.

Sophia Dunkley broke the backbone of this run chase with her blistering start and the intent rubbed off on Alice Capsey too. The top three got starts but couldn't convert them into anything significant. However, the intent they batted with was laying down a marker for their statement of intent. Chinelle Henry was West Indies' best bowler on a day most of the others struggled.

It was the captain and vice-captain, Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt, who took their side home to a comfortable victory in the end. They've done so with 33 balls to spare as well, which puts them in pole position in their group for the time being. It's a 13th consecutive loss for the West Indies in T20Is, and they'll need to turn that form around sooner rather than later if they are to stay alive in this tournament.
