So with the group stage done and dusted, we have our semi-final line-ups ready in the Women's ODI World Cup 2022. It will be Australia Women taking on the West Indies Women on Wednesday at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, followed by South Africa Women vs England Women from the Hagley Oval, Christchurch, on Thursday. India Women put 274 runs on the board to defend and took it to the last ball of the 2nd innings to decide the outcome of the match in heavy dew on the Hagley Oval ground in Christchurch. Even though they lost, they won many hearts with the way they hung in there and almost pulled off an unbelievable victory. But congratulations to South Africa, full credit to them for batting so well and chasing a stiff total down! They now go on to face England Women in the semi-final at the very venue on Thursday.

The run chase began with a stutter for South Africa as Lizelle Lee was run out by a direct hit from Harmanpreet Kaur, but after that, Laura Wolvaardt and Lara Goodall put up a massive 100-run partnership to take their team to a strong position. It looked almost impossible at that stage for India to make a comeback.

But Rajeshwari Gayakwad brought smiles on Indian faces by getting Goodall stumped, thanks to a neat piece of glove-work by Richa Ghosh. And that wicket brought another as Harmanpreet Kaur cleaned bowled Laura Wolvaardt all of a sudden and opened the game up. Sune Luus and Mignon du Preez tried their best to resurrect things but it was Harmanpreet again with the ball, picking up the South African captain LBW with a sharply turning delivery.

Then came a good partnership between du Preez and Marizanne Kapp which threatened to take the game permanently away from India, before Harmanpreet Kaur once again stepped up to the plate to run Kapp out with the help of Richa Ghosh.

Chloe Tryon then hit some lusty blows to take South Africa further close to the target, but got caught and bowled by Rajeshwari Gayakwad, to bring more drama into the contest. At that stage, the game was still in the balance.

Seven runs were required off the last over, with Trisha Chetty providing good support to Mignon du Preez. Deepti Sharma was given the responsibility to bowl it. When du Preez tried to come back for the second run after getting to her 50, Trisha Chetty was found short of her crease at the non-striker's end, against thanks to Harmanpreet Kaur at long-on and Deepti Sharma, who collected the throw nicely to take the dislodge the bails from a distance with a calm head on her shoulders.

Catastrophe struck India when Deepti Sharma overstepped and handed the opposition an extra run. What was worse, was that Mignon du Preez got caught off that delivery at long-on! Had the extra not been registered, South Africa would have required 3 runs from the last ball. Instead, two runs were left to get off two balls.

But Deepti held her nerve well and ensured that the free-hit ball was taken only for a single to set a situation of 1 run to get off 1 ball. Mignon du Preez took strike, and breaking all Indian hearts, got that run needed to win it for her team and finish India's World Cup campaign.

A crucial drop catch, a number of fumbles, some inconsistent bowling, the unavailability of Jhulan Goswami and a few less runs in the 1st innings cost India the match.

But having said that, there were some moments of brilliance in the field, with Harmanpreet Kaur leading from the front. Smriti Mandhana after dropping the catch, saved a certain boundary to keep India in the game. The spin bowlers despite so much dew on the ground, managed to bowl so many tight overs and so successfully. The captaincy from Mithali Raj was praiseworthy given the limitations there were. And finally, it was a spirited effort from all the Indian Women who did not let the match slip at any stage and gave their opponents a very tough fight. Mithali Raj and company can leave with their heads held high.

India Women would look back at their campaign and rue the batting efforts against New Zealand and England, and also the match against Australia, which they also managed to take right to the wire.

In all likelihood, we may have seen the last of both Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami in ODI cricket for the Indian Women's Cricket Team. We take a moment to salute these two legends of our game for whatever they have given to India.

South Africa Women on the other hand, are ready to take on their opponents in the semi-finals and are looking extremely good to go through to the final.

South Africa Women captain, Sune Luus: We are extremely happy for Mignon, she has found form at just the right time. We took this match today as preparation for the semi-final and it worked out well for us. It is amazing for Laura to play the way she is. We need to keep going in this manner. We have had a great campaign. We have won some improbable ones and this augers well for us heading into the next match.

India Women captain, Mithali Raj: I think we have given it our all. It was a good game for both sides, but for us, it means the end of our campaign. With the bowlers that we had and the way they have been bowling, I thought 274 was a good total. Jhulan's experience would have definitely come good but it was also the chance for the other bowlers to step up to the plate. With our World Cup being the last, it now presents an opportunity for the next set of players to take the baton forward. A big thanks to all the fans who have supported us right through, I wish the support continues for us as we go forward.
