He pulled it back with a three-wicket burst with the ball and then added the finishing touches with the bat. Daryl Mitchell truly defines the word clutch and he has shown just why yet again with a stellar all-round show that has powered Lancashire back to winning ways after having lost four games on the spin.

Mind you, it wasn't an easy chase after Mitchell Santner's half-century took Worcestershire to a score of 177. The new ball bowlers began brilliantly thereafter with Dillon Pennington and Adam Finch generating movement and hitting their lengths to perfection. Jos Buttler started well even as Philip Salt struggled before perishing. Once Luke Wells also fell inside the powerplay, they were in a lot of trouble with escalated further as the spinners came on to apply the choke.

The asking rate rose alarmingly and it left Lancashire in a real quandary with Buttler also slowing down. The move to turn to an over of pace backfired though for Brett D'Oliveira and that's where the momentum swung with Buttler and Steven Croft flicking a switch and powering along around the halfway mark. They unleashed a number of big overs even as Santner mixed his pace and kept things tight at his end. It wasn't the easiest pitch to bat on with some purchase on offer for spin but Buttler racked up a half-century with Croft also looking in fine touch.

The game was then broken wide open with both batters departing in quick succession as Buttler nicked behind and Croft was involved in a chaotic mix-up with Mitchell. The latter took it upon himself to get the job done though with Liam Livingstone chipping in with a cameo and despite Pat Brown's double-strike following a nightmare of an outing with the ball until then, Mitchell ensured that there were no further hiccups as Lancashire wrapped things up comfortably to put their campaign back on track. They now go level with five other teams on eight points in the North Group although they've played more games than any of them. As for the Rapids, they must not lose heart and back themselves to treat this as a minor blip and bounce back soon.

Jos Buttler: It wasn't straightforward. It was slightly tough at the start but we hung in there and it was Livi and Mitchell who got the job done for us. (Personal form)Getting better. Certainly not back at my best but sometimes you've got to hang in there and grind it out. He's been such an experienced player for us. Lovely to play with him. It allows you to take risks because you know there are others in the ranks. We're confident that we can turn things around. Great to get the win and play the Lancashire way. It's easy to look far ahead but it's a long competition. You want to get into the top two but we want to qualify and see what happens.

Of course he goes for the glory shot and wraps it up in style! Such is the form Mitchell has shown and my word, hasn't he played a gem of a knock here. Having lost four on the bounce, Lancashire return to winning ways!
