From start to finish, the Melbourne Stars did not put a foot wrong today. It was the kind of performance they were desperately after and to do it against their crosstown rivals will please them to no end. It was set up by Sophie Day's career-best figures of 4/19 with Annabel Sutherland breaking the back of the Renegades' middle-order with a three-wicket haul of her own.

That said, a mix-up saw Jemimah Rodrigues run out early in the chase before Lauren Winfield-Hill nicked off to second slip soon after. That broke the game open and gave the Renegades some slender hope but when Alice Capsey and Sutherland combined forces, a steady partnership, which was the need of the hour, came their way.

Slowly but surely, the duo went about knocking off the deficit with minimal fuss. The Renegades did all they could in their fairness, with skipper Sophie Molineux also attacking with two slips in the Powerplay while Ismail was in operation. The plan to see out the South African speedster and rotate the strike around worked like a charm though with Capsey and Sutherland also finding the ropes on the odd occasion.

A double-whammy owing to a couple of soft dismissals just threw the game up for grabs again. But as long as Sutherland was there, the Stars had little reason to panic. And she ensured that they got the job done in the company of skipper Nicole Faltum, shoring the Stars up to sixth position now with 3 points as they finally get a win against their name. The Renegades' poor season continues though as they slump to the bottom of the points table. They have quite a bit of catching up to do in the games to come.

A belated call by the umpire but it brings the curtains down on this contest. A one-sided affair but after a long wait, Melbourne Stars register their first win of the season.
