South Africa lost the wicket of Reeza Hendricks on a golden duck as they began chasing the target of 322 on a sour note. Trent Boult and Matt Henry continued to trouble the South African batters by swinging the ball from both ends but Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen did just enough to hold on to their wickets. Rassie went on to complete his half-century before skying one towards Neesham off the bowling of Mitchell Santner at 51.

Aiden Markram fell to the spin of Ish Sodhi as pressure mounted on Quinton de Kock to chase the total. He was bruised and battered a lot but refused to retire in this warm-up fixture. Heinrich Klaasen had a swipe at the part-timers Glenn Phillips and Rachin Ravindra before edging a delivery off Trent Boult at 39. David Miller played too slowly at 18 off 26 as the rain Gods had the last laugh. South Africa fell short of 7 runs in the end as Quinton de Kock's unbeaten knock of 84 off 89 went in vain.

New Zealand tried eight different bowlers on the night but it was only Henry, Boult, Neesham, and Santner who were able to keep their economy under six runs an over. Ish Sodhi looks much settled than Rachin Ravindra to stake a claim on the fifth bowler in the side with Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips coming in handy with overs in between.

Earlier in the day, Devon Conway retired hurt at 78 while Tom Latham scored 52 off 56 in New Zealand's path to 321-6. Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi picked three wickets each while the rest of the Proteas bowlers remained wicketless, putting them in a spot of bother.
