Jordan Cox is the Player of the Match! Here's what he has to say: "It was good, playing here is an honour in front of the home crowd. Since that time out, it changed everything, I kept going after the bowlers. Don't think anyone could've done, it's massive as team and put that total on the board was amazing. That top spot is what we want, we've worked hard for it, disciplined and so far it has been good."
8:42 PM local time, 1:12 AM IST | Oval Invincibles win by 83 runs and climb to the top of the points table.
Jordan Cox 86* (29) | Tom Curran 4/15 Jonny Bairstow 50 (28) | Matt Henry 2/39
Team Oval lived up to their moniker "Invincibles" tonight. Being put into bat they put in a performance that will linger on in the memories of the fans for a while to come. They bettered the previous highest ever total scored in The Hundred by 18 runs and at no point looked like the second best team on display.
Tawanda Muyeye set the tone with some purposeful shot-making. Sam Curran kept it going with his clean ball-striking. Donavon Ferreira played just six balls but left an impact. The innings was such that Will Jacks, who scored at a strike rate of 135, seemed rather slow.
But the headline act was Jordan Cox — whose hitting was belligerent and unrelenting. He faced 29 balls — 10 of which were smashed for sixes. And hardly any of them was a small six. They all went a long way back and would have fetched maximum in any ground of the world.
Welsh Fire's tactics were slightly hard to understand. For instance, Saif Zaib — who only gave 6 runs and picked a wicket in his five balls — was not given another chance to bowl
Chasing a daunting score, the visitors got off to the worst start possible — they lost a wicket off the first ball. The writing was pretty much on the wall then and there. However, for a while the Bairstow and Kohler-Cadmore threatened to take Fire close. Both unfurled out some brutal strikes, but alas, could not sustain the momentum for long.
Billings kept on rotating his bowlers and each of them delivered the goods like they have throughout the competition. Even today, only Nathan Sowter went wicketless. Jason Behrendorff with 3/20 and Tom Curran with 4/15 ended up with the brag worthy figures.
Ajeet Singh Dale has been dismissed for 0 runs off 1 balls
18.3 Tom Curran to Ajeet Singh Dale, OUT! CURRAN TAKES A BLINDER! Oval Invincibles thrash Welsh Fire here! Has been a clinical performance this from Invincibles, Fire have plenty to ponder on how things went for them throughout. Full outside the off-stump, Dale belted it away, but Curran with sharp reflexes at short extra-cover. Quick to put his hand out and plucks it out of thin air.
Ajeet Singh Dale batting at 11th position
No.11 Ajeet Singh Dale, RHB, marks his guard now.
It came swirling down to Nathan Sowter, who circled around, lost his glasses too, but still kept his eyes on the ball throughout.
David Payne has been dismissed for 1 runs off 5 balls
18.2 Tom Curran to David Payne, OUT! GOES STRAIGHT UP AND TAKEN! Sowter takes a simple catch, Fire lose the ninth wicket in the process. Back of a length on off-stump, Payne with the pull, but gets rushed and top edged it straight up and Sowter at backward point, makes no mistake.
18.1 Tom Curran to Matt Henry, OH! Clever change of pace, length delivery on off-stump. Henry chipped it to long-on for just one.
Tom Curran to bowl.
Time for our final change of ends for the night. Welsh Fire need...well, forget it! Even a six off every ball won't get them there.
18.0
17.5 Rashid Khan to David Payne, OH! Length delivery, turning into leg-stump. Payne with a slog sweep and whiskers past the inside edge and the leg-stump too to the keeper.
17.4 Rashid Khan to David Payne, short on off-stump, Payne swipes it to mid-wicket, but finds the fielder and it's a dot.
17.3 Rashid Khan to Matt Henry, fires full on the stumps, Henry slams it down to long-on for just a single.
17.2 Rashid Khan to Matt Henry, FOUR! Jacks can't stop it at wide long-on. Short on the leg-stump, Henry belted it away and Jacks gets around with a dive, past him to the ropes.
17.1 Rashid Khan to Matt Henry, googly from Rashid to start, length delivery, turning into leg-stump. Henry with a big swipe and misses, pings on the pad.
Rashid Khan to bowl now. Welsh Fire need 90 runs to win off 15 balls.
