One could be surprised on seeing Williamson being adjudged the Player of the Match going by the fact that the scorecard reflects a 29-ball 31 alone but truth be told, he was right on the money in terms of marshalling his resources and if not for his direct hit to get rid of Maxwell, the end result could have been a lot different. The Sunrisers Hyderabad have reasons to smile and have given reasons for their fans to smile after a long season. They could have another opportunity at doing so a couple of days from now as they return to the same venue to take on the Mumbai Indians and play party poopers there as well. As for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, their quest to end in the top-two has taken a big dent and given the massive gulf in the net run rate between theirs and that of the Chennai Super Kings, it does look like a tough proposition now even if both teams in question finish on 18 points apiece. We can confirm after this result though that the Delhi Capitals have confirmed a top-two finish and will feature in Qualifier 1 on Sunday!

Kane Williamson (Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain and Player of the Match): The flame has been here the whole time. It was great to see some of those small improvements. The surfaces have been really challenging and sometimes when you face them it can be quite conflicting. It was great to see the way we defended that total. We were trying to maximize the Powerplay and when you get some rhythm you try to progress but then the ball was holding in the surface so we had to take a couple of steps back. It was quite hard but it was great to get that total and then defend it. We knew that if we stayed tight we could put some pressure and get the rewards. (On the wicket of Maxwell) He's probably seeing the ball better than anybody right now and is timing it beautifully on some challenging surfaces, so dismissing him one way or the other was the key. Glad we were able to do that and maintain pressure on the field and with the ball. Bangalore are a fantastic side and for us to turn up and show that fight even though we are out of contention was great to see and great for our morale. (On Umran Malik) He certainly is special. We've seen him in the nets for a couple of seasons and it's a special moment for him to get the opportunity to play. To be honest it's surprising to see him come and perform like this. He's a real competitor and a valuable addition to the side. I just try and keep it simple but he's got a lot of mates in the team who are helpful in sharing messages. He then takes it on and then goes and expresses himself on the field. Hopefully we keep learning as a side and we have a quick turnaround before the next game and we need to pick ourselves up. It would have been great if we came out on the right side of a few tight ones but we still try hard and that's why the way we turned up today was quite satisfying.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Sunrisers Hyderabad): My finger is fine. I got hit twice there - once when I dropped the catch but it's fine. When AB bats and I say there were no nerves, I would be lying. I was focused on going full to him and bowl wide yorkers. When he hit me over my head for a six I went back to the wide yorkers. We thought we were 10-15 short and the way we bowled was excellent.

Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore Captain): The intent has to be to try and get it done as soon as possible. You don't want to stretch these games too deep. But after losing a couple of wickets, rebuilding was the key and I thought Dev and Maxi did that brilliantly. Maxi's wicket was the turning point in terms of being the momentum-changer. Of course we had AB as well but you need that set batter to see it off. I think we were brilliant in the first half with the ball. Shahbaz played a crucial knock and took the momentum off the opposition. It is a game of small margins and things could have gone either way. Sunrisers bowled really well towards the end. Yuzi is bowling pretty well now and it looks like he has worked on his bowling during his time off. Him bowling well is always a good sign, we want him to continue bowling like this. (On the pace of Umran Malik) This tournament throws up talent every year and it's good to see a guy bowling at 150 clicks. It's important to understand the problems of individuals and how to maintain their bodies hereon. The pool of Indian fast bowlers is great and we have to try and look after them. We were very confident coming into this game but we can't win each and every game and we have been professional in not going over the top with wins or being bogged down by losses. Just a little hiccup in our journey.

CATCH YOUR BREATH IF YOU CAN FOLKS! This has been a humdinger like none other. Look at the happiness on the faces of the Sunrisers fans - they've had very very little to feel happy about and this is their moment in what has been a very difficult season for them.

Defending a below-par 141, the Sunrisers needed an early breakthrough and Bhuvneshwar Kumar provided exactly that with the big wicket of Virat Kohli. Despite putting one away to the fence off the very first delivery, the RCB skipper played all around an in-swinger to be pinned in front. A promotion for Dan Christian then proved futile as Siddarth Kaul snaffled him with a crafty slower delivery en route to a wicket maiden as the Sunrisers clearly had their tail up.

Srikar Bharat brought out a couple of meaty strokes before the pacy Umran Malik strangled him down the leg-side with a bouncer to keep the Royal Challengers on a leash. Glenn Maxwell was having none of it though as the in-form superstar wielded a couple of big ones off a certain Rashid Khan to signal his intentions clearly.

Maxwell was batting on a different wicket altogether as he went about dispatching anything loose to great effect. It needed something special to bring about his downfall and it was skipper Kane Williamson who conjured a bit of wizardry in the form of a direct hit to send Maxwell back. That brought AB de Villiers to the crease and even as he brought out a few sweeps off Rashid, the asking rate crept up by the over.

Padikkal's crawl failed to find a new gear and he eventually perished before Shahbaz Ahmed took the bull by the horns with some vital blows. With de Villiers looking set too, it seemed as though the duo would pull it off - especially with Bhuvneshwar spilling a simple catch in the deep, showing the nerves in the SRH ranks.

Jason Holder sent down a stupendous penultimate over though as he removed Shahbaz and kept de Villiers quiet to bring it down to 13 needed off the last over. Bhuvneshwar then brought out a masterclass in death bowling - something he has developed a reputation for over the years - and with de Villiers farming the strike, the South African superstar clattered one straight over the bowler's head to bring it down to 6 needed off the final 2 deliveries. In the end though, it was Bhuvneshwar who held his nerve and bowled to his field to deny de Villiers and the Royal Challengers.

This was a throwback to the famed Sunrisers defenses of the past. And much like the times of yore, it was a collective effort that came to the fore. Each of the bowlers picked up a wicket apiece - Siddarth Kaul sent down a crucial spell while Jason Holder did his bit as he has all tournament. Umran Malik sent the speedometers soaring again as he returned outstanding figures of 1/21 off his 4 overs and Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the protagonist who started it off with the wicket of Virat Kohli before sealing it in the final over. But the turning point had to be the run out of the set Glenn Maxwell, who seemed all but set to take RCB home.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has done it! He has done the unthinkable - he has denied AB de Villiers! What a dramatic finale we have witnessed towards the back end and at the end of it all, the Sunrisers Hyderabad hold their nerve to beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore by a mere 4 runs!
