A convincing win for South Africa as they become the last team to go through to the final four. In the first semi-final, it will be superpowers India and Australia fighting it out on Thursday while South Africa will square off against England on Friday. Mark your dates and do not forget to tune into Sportskeeda. Like always, it was a delight bringing all the live updates from the game. Till the next time, this is me (Arya Sekhar Chakraborty) signing off also on behalf of my fellow commentator Pratyush Rohra. Goodnight and Goodbye.
Sune Luss (South Africa captain): It was good that they batted through. Bit of a nervy start but your have to back your players. Wolvaardt and Tazmin showed what they can do. Hopefully, we can continue it in the semis. They were excellent. Hit the straps well. 113 was below par on this surface. We knew we can chase it down if we keep them under 120. Its the first one in South Africa, Newlands has been packed tonight, and hopefully for Friday’s game as well. It’s a massive honor (on becoming the first South African team to qualify for a home semi-final in a World Cup). It’s an incredible feeling. We will have to soak it in and come back strong. Newlands has been amazing and hopefully, everyone is here on Friday.
Nigar Sultana Joty (Bangladesh captain): I guess we needed 140 plus for the South Africans to chase. We didn’t manage runs in the powerplay, there was no partnership in the middle. It is very difficult when you are defending small totals and you missing chances. It becomes very difficult for the bowlers. I think they way they played, like Marufa and Shorna. I am really grateful for their presence. They are very energetic on the field and wants to perform for the team. Thanks to the Bangladesh crowd. After losing three back to back games, they are still her supporting us.
Time for a chat with both the captains.
Laura Wolvaardt is the Player of the Match. Here is what she has to say: Taz (Brits) and I were under a bit of pressure at the halfway mark. It wasn't the best start for us till the first 10 overs. So, it was a mental test for us and we had to dig in and push through. We made it look a bit harder than it should have been on this surface. Our bowling unit deserves this trophy. To defend them to a total like that on this surface is terrific. It's so special to play at Newlands. To see how we started off in the tournament with a loss to Sri Lanka, and to come together like to come good feels nice. I've had a very frustrating tournament so far, so this feels very good.
South Africa Women won by 10 wickets (with 14 deliveries to spare)
Bangladesh Women 113/6 in 20 overs Nigar Sultana Joty 30(34) | Marizanne Kapp 2/17(4) | Ayabonga Khaka 2/21(4)
South Africa Women 117/0 in 17.4 overs Laura Wolvaardt 66*(56) | Tazmin Brits 50*(51)
The scoreboard would suggest that South Africa thrashed Bangladesh in all departments but it wasn’t the case to be honest. It was a comfortable 10-wicket victory in the end but not before the Bangladesh bowlers gave a great account for themselves for the majority of the run chase before giving it away towards the final stages of the match as Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt went berserk.
Marufa Akter and Nahida Akter started off with some tidy overs and also created opportunities which weren’t grabbed by the fielders. Jahanara Alam then bowled another tight over which kept the pressure going for South Africa. Brits and Wolvaardt managed to get a move on in the final two powerplay overs that settled the nerves.
The leg-spinning duo of Fahima Khatun and Shorna Akter bowled well in tandem and dried out the boundaries in the middle overs. Even the rotation of strike was few and far between from the openers up until the 14th over. They tried taking it on but the spinners were spot on and didn’t allow them to get going. Finally, it was Brits who got some momentum with a couple of boundaries of the 14th over and it totally turned the game in South Africa’s favor.
Then it was Laura Wolvaardt who turned it on for the Proteas with three boundaries of Nahida Akter in the 16th over which brought the equation down to just 14 required off the last four and it was always going to be a straightforward task from there on. Both the openers completed half-centuries and eventually took the side over the line in the 17th over.
Earlier in the day, it was the Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana Joty who won the toss and opted to bat. On the back of some sensible knocks from the skipper and Sobhana Mostary, Bangladesh struggled their way to 113 in 20 overs which was never going to be enough. Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka were the pick of the bowlers, with a couple each.
This is the highest partnership in this edition of the T20 World Cup and what a time to notch it up. A pretty special feeling for South Africa as they get through into the final four and will face England in the semi-final on Friday.
17.5 Jahanara Alam to Laura Wolvaardt, FOUR! LET THE DANCES BEGIN, SOUTH AFRICA ARE HEADING TO THE SEMI-FINALS! It's the first time South Africa will be playing a semi-final in an ICC event in their own backyard. Wolvaardt gets them there in style, punishing this overpitched delivery to drive it through the covers in her authoritative style! South Africa won by 10 wickets!
A shot of authority and style. South Africa on the cusp of semi-final.
17.4 Jahanara Alam to Laura Wolvaardt, FOUR! Scores are level! Overpitched outside the off-stump and that's been put away in some style by Wolvaardt. Carves out a squre drive behind point to inch close to the finish line
17.3 Jahanara Alam to Laura Wolvaardt, pitched up full and outside the off-stump. Wolvaardt can't connect with her drive on that occasion, no run
17.2 Jahanara Alam to Laura Wolvaardt, full and straight on this occasion. Bunted down to long-on to pick up a brace after some excellent running to put pressure on the fielders
17.1 Jahanara Alam to Tazmin Brits, pitched up outside the off-stump. Brits crunches her drive towards long-off and brings up her half-century! Flexes her muscles before getting a hug from a partner
Jahanara Alam [3-0-15-0] comes back into the attack.
South Africa are just 8 runs away from a place in the semi-final.

16.6 Marufa Akter to Laura Wolvaardt, AH! Nearly chopped that on! Good length slower one outside the off-stump, Wolvaardt pushes at it to get a thickish inside edge that rolls to the keeper. Great stop by the keeper, no run
16.5 Marufa Akter to Laura Wolvaardt, FOUR! At the back of a length and width outside the off-stump. Wolvaardt throws her hands at it to slice this past short third to find the ropes
The Bangladesh skipper looks in pain here. The physios runs out to the middle to attend her. Joty might have just landed awkwardly which has resulted in the injury.
16.4 Marufa Akter to Tazmin Brits, SKIED... SAFE! Pitched up on the off-stump line and Brits threw the kitchen sink at it. The ball balloons over the bowler's head and falls in no man's land at mid-off to allow a single
