Commentary

A comfortable win for Sri Lanka in the end. They haven't looked back after that loss in the first T20I earlier in the tour. After winning the T20I series 2-1, they are 1-0 ahead in the ODI tour. Charith Asalanka is the Player of the Match! Here's what he has to say: It was a convincing win, guys played well and the weather was on our side. My plan was to attack right from the outset, played with the positive mindset. Me and Nishan played well. More than 15 overs, we got a chance with the wet ball, they couldn't grip the ball and capitalized on it. It was a good innings from Nishan, it's a good headache to have.

Shai Hope [West Indies captain]: It's something we can't control, we can focus on what we can do, but we need to focus on plenty of things. Guys showed a bit of intent at the back end of the innings, take a leap out of the book at the bat and show more intent, might get a bigger score. Challenging with the wet ball, every time you bowl it was tough, especially with the spinners. We need to find a way out of it.

It has been a walk in the park for Sri Lanka. After the long rain break, the pitch was expected to offer some help for the bowlers. There was some early in the innings, but the West Indies bowlers were not disciplined enough to take advantage of it. They continued to dish up a lot of boundary balls and the Sri Lankan batters were classy enough not to miss out.

Alzarri Joseph started well, picking up two wickets in his first two overs, dismissing Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis cheaply. Sadeera Samarawickrama too followed suit, losing his off-stump to Gudakesh Motie. However, even when they were losing wickets, the scoring rate never dropped during the powerplay. Seales was struggling to get his line right and the boundaries kept coming.

Skipper Charith Asalanka joined debutant Nishan Madushka in the middle at the end of the powerplay, and they were just too good for the visitors tonight. There was plenty of turn on the track for the spinners, but neither Hayden Walsh nor Roston Chase managed to hit the right areas consistently. The middle overs were crucial to influence the momentum, but the West Indies spinners failed miserably to find breakthroughs or even stem the flow of runs. The dismal effort on the field didn't help their course either. Both the batters hit half-centuries and put on a partnership of 137 runs from just 109 balls, and they were well and truly in the driver's seat by the time the partnership was broken.

Alzarri Joseph was effective with the new ball, hitting the pitch hard and extracting some movement. Gudakesh Motie showcased reasonable control with the ball and picked up three wickets in the spell. None of the other bowlers showed any kind of control. Hayden Walsh Jr. was crucial for the visitors on this track, but he continuously erred on his length, dishing up one boundary ball after the other. Jayden Seales, too, struggled to control his line and kept straying on the leg-side.
