That will be all from our side for now as we draw the curtains on our live coverage of this game. It's Soumarya Dutta taking your leave on behalf of Sooryanaryanan Sesha. See you soon!
Right so, a really frustrating day here in Colombo as this all important contest between Sri Lanka Women and Australia Women has been abandoned due to rain. Sri Lanka will feel that they've dodged a bullet here as they won't really mind coming out with a point against the mighty Aussies. The girls from Down Under would be disappointed though as they would have fancied their chances against the hosts. The action will continue however in the ICC Women's World Cup 2025 and Colombo is all set to host the high stakes India Women vs Pakistan Women clash tomorrow.
5:38 PM local time and IST: And alas, the news we've been dreading is official - the match has been abandoned! Handshakes all around as Australia and Sri Lanka split points with Australia now with three points to their name. Sri Lanka are on the board with a solitary point but it's such a pity that the crowd who have waited so patiently today cannot get to witness a game. The way it was hosing down though, this was all but inevitable!
James Dixon: "Annabel Sutherland is the real future star in this lineup. Her presence with both the bat and the ball makes a whole lot of difference to this side as Ellyse Perry has reduced bowling over the last few years."
5:10 PM local time and IST: Nothing new to report. We keep losing overs, the players continue to wait - much like us. It has gotten extremely gloomy at the Premadasa! Some fans continue to remain patiently seated. For their sake more than anyone else, we really hope there's some play today!
4:47 PM local time and IST: Worse news - it's bucketing down now in Colombo! Dare we say that the inevitable is well and truly on the cards at this rate.
Neelesh Ahirwar: "Looking forward to seeing Ellyse Perry in action. She is an absolute legend. I think she has the highest batting average in this WODI World Cup 2025."
Azim: "Will a washout make every game a must-win for SL?" Not necessarily, Azim. Still way too early to think of elimination and qualification. Dare we say Sri Lanka won't mind taking the one point on offer today...
4:18 PM local time and IST: We're hearing that the rain has intensified...
The rain gods haven't been too kind here at Colombo but the fans are still out there in numbers. There is no lack in enthusiasm and we expect a great crowd once the rain recedes.
4:01 PM local time and IST: Live visuals coming in show that it continues to rain in Colombo. A lot of young fans in attendance and they will be eagerly hopeful for some action. We have officially started to lose overs though! Mel Jones on air confirms that the cutoff time for a 20-over game is 8:08 PM local time!
Romesh Galapinge: "Chamari Athapaththu is an icon for the future generations. Her contributions to SL cricket in general and Women's cricket in particular are towering."
Kewal Jha: "Australia have incredible depth in their line-up. They bat all the way down to number 9 probably and have around 6-7 genuine bowling options."
3:40 PM local time and IST: Nothing new to report, we're afraid. And we could be losing overs pretty soon at this rate! In fact, the skies look extremely grey and as though they're about to burst into tears - and well, it is still raining anyway but it could just intensify...
3:10 PM local time IST: We hate to bear this news - the drizzle has returned and so have the covers! The game should have begun by now but alas, not to be the case. The entire ground is covered again!
Utfulunge Peiris: "Is there any update regarding the toss?" The covers were being removed but the clouds are still hovering around. We expect more rain in the next couple of hours and the wait and watch game might continue.
Pitch Report with Aaron Finch and Alan Wilkins: This looks an absolute beauty. The first thing to notice is the cover of grass - not a lot of live grass but just enough to keep it intact. You have to be prepared to pitch it fuller and challenge the top of off stump. Both pace bowling lineups will be prepared to do that today. The length is critical.
2:42 PM local time: The covers are coming off! Let's hope we're not far away from the toss then.
