Commentary

So that'll be all for our coverage of this 2nd ODI. Things are set up for a cracking series decider at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on Saturday, December 9. Sam Curran turned it around first before Jos Buttler did the same with the bat. And having done a lot of things right in that first game, these two pieces falling into place was bound to flip the scales for England. They've turned in a clinical performance - a complete one really to roar back in style and send a statement to the West Indies, who will be disappointed but will not have much time to dwell over that. Travel, rest and start all over again - that's the way the cricketing world rolls, doesn't it?

Jos Buttler (England captain): Yeah of course, have been searching for a bit of form. Loved to spend some time in the middle and to get the side over the finish line is the icing on the cake. Really pleasing, I have been playing for a while and its great to get to those milestones. Had those little periods which was frustrating but in the process of getting back to the player I am. He is a brilliant character (speaking on Sam Curran), he had a tough day. He never shies away and he led from the front today picking up those early wickets. Great to be in those situations. Must win game today and we rose to the occasion. Looking forward to the Barbados match.

Shai Hope (West Indies captain): As we all could see we didn't start well with the bat. But I must take the positives from the game - Sherfane played a really good innings. But we didn't finish the innings well and we fell at the back end. (On Rutherford) He's been doing it for quite sometime now especially in the regional tournament. The way he's playing now is very pleasing for us. I'm sure if he continues like this we can get a lot of good performances from Sherfane. We know he can normally bowl as well. It's not something we expect from him in this team but we know he's someone we can turn to. (On the spinners) It was challenging for the spinners. Any time you bowl here under lights (it is challenging) - there was a bit of dew as well. I must commend the efforts of the spinners but we just didn't have enough runs. (Thoughts heading into Barbados?) We have to win the game to win the series. Everything we do will revolve around more planning and preparation.

Sam Curran (Player of the Match): Yeah really pleased, it was a tough day but you have to move on. We lost that game and bounced back strongly tonight, so really pleased. Quite a bit breeze, the ball didn't swung much. Changed the angle and it worked and it was a good batting effort as well. We did so many things right in the first game, we had to come back hard. A good all-round show from the guys.

A lot of happy faces in the English camp as they greet their skipper. He's a popular man as David Gower mentions on air and they'll be super chuffed over the fact that he has got a score just when he was after one.

There may have been a bit of a hiccup in between but the end result was never in doubt for England. Their bowlers set things up perfectly and even as the pitch showed a tacky nature in the second innings, a target of 203 alone meant that they were primed to get the job done quickly. And so they did!

Will Jacks and Philip Salt went hammer and tongs after the seamers along expected lines. Pace on the ball was a premium as it flew to the fence quite regularly with the rub of the green also going the openers' way. England certainly wouldn't have complained for they have not had it go their way for a while now. Jacks was not fazed by the odd edge that could have had his number on another day, instead opting to play fire with fire as he imposed himself on the contest.

Salt was castled by Romario Shepherd although the powerplay belonged to England in entirety. Even as Jacks raised a half-century though, Gudakesh Motie nabbed Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett as he bowled with guile and control, extracting enough purchase off the surface to keep the batters on their toes. Yannic Cariah also found the track to be helpful although he didn't bowl with the same control and consistency beyond a point. Sherfane Rutherford was the surprise package though as he trapped Jacks plumb in front, throwing a spanner into England's works.

That's when the present and future of English cricket combined to ensure that things would take a smooth path thereafter. Jos Buttler and Harry Brook were happy to nudge and knock the ball around for singles and doubles without taking any undue risk. The good deliveries were respected and both looked in fluent touch before chancing their arm off the ones flighted in the arc by Cariah. Shai Hope tried all his options and rotated his bowlers around regularly even as his failure to bowl Motie out was rather bizarre. But eventually, for all their fight and effort, the West Indies just didn't have a sizeable score that could put the visitors under the pump.

A half-century for Buttler was the icing on the cake as he managed to arrest his slump with a noteworthy contribution. And with England drawing level in the series, he will see the smiles this evening. Stick around for the presentation!

And that's a fine shot to seal victory for England! A seamless and near-flawless partnership between Brook and Buttler gets the job done. England win by 6 wickets and take the series into a decider in Barbados!

Buttler won't have the final say in this contest in all likelihood even as he looked to seal the deal with an expansive stroke. The grin of relief on his face when he got to his half-century though told a story. He needed a score quite badly and he has got one. England require 1 run to win to level the series.
