21:30 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Kuldeep Yadav (POTM): I am very happy with my performances. When I get an opportunity, I try to do my best. I just want to bowl in the right areas. When you play, you have to focus a lot. I try to do well and whatever matches there have been, I have enjoyed my bowling. The team combination matters. I don't have a problem with that (not playing) - whenever I get a chance I try to do my best. You can't keep playing in the same areas. Hasaranga plays spin really well and the batters have no option when there are wickets falling. I always focus on practicing my batting in the nets. Over the last one year I've worked very hard. It's tough to bowl 10 overs due to my aggressive rhythm. But I have worked very hard. (On his friendship with Yuzvendra Chahal) His support has always been there. He played the T20s and the last ODI so he told me about what the batters were trying to do.

21:29 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Rohit Sharma (2/2): A lot of us didn't play ODIs the last year. Ideally we would like to have a left-hander but we know the quality of the right-handed batters out there in the middle. It is something we are quite comfortable with at the moment. We haven't thought about it yet. Once we get to Trivandrum, we'll have a look at the pitch. We'll definitely have a look at some of the guys. There are three ODIs coming against New Zealand as well so we have to keep the guys fresh. (On Kuldeep) For him to come back and play the game he played today was fantastic. He brought us back into the game. Kusal and Fernando were batting really well and Kuldeep as we've seen so often found his way through. He's a very confident bowler right now and it definitely augurs well for the team.

21:28 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Rohit Sharma (1/2): I thought it was a close game but having games like these teaches you a lot. We had to scrap and build an innings under pressure. It's something that we've been speaking about for a while now. KL has been batting at 5 for a long time now. It gives us the depth with experienced batters batting at 5 and 6. It gives us the confidence to bat freely at the top of the order as well. Both of them (KL and Hardik) have got a lot of experience of batting under pressure. In hindsight, yes it will be nice to have a left-hander. But again I don't believe too much in it because the guys who are given a chance at the moment have got a lot of runs behind them playing for the last year or so.

21:25 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Dasun Shanaka: We were there in the game till the end, not enough runs on the board and hence we lost the game. At the start, we discussed, it was a flat deck, with the kind of start we got, we were eying 300 but Kuldeep bowled brilliantly in the middle phase. Especially in these conditions, batters not getting starts is a big concern. We had a chance, the ball was moving, I told my seamers to stick to the basics and move the ball within the stump line.

21:19 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Match Summary

KL Rahul (2/2): We were batting first in Guwahati, openers put the pressure on them and tried to get the extra 20-25 runs, took the bowlers on and always thinking to attack and bowlers often read the mind of the batter, when I went into bat last game, we were in a comfortable position and allowed myself to took the bowlers on, it was a different game today, important to soak in the pressure, see that the bowlers don't get into it and kill the game for us. (On batting at number 5) One thing I really enjoyed batting at number 5 is I don't have to rush back in, have some time to come back and assess the situation of the game and allow myself bat with the situation demands, if you can read that and you more often do the job for the team. Rohit's pretty clear on where he wants me to bat, I try and do my job.

21:19 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Match Summary

KL Rahul (1/2): Won't say it was a flat wicket, can't say it was doing a lot, quite a sporty wicket as I kept on this wicket too and 220 on this wicket was good for us, spongy bounce from the back of a length, we thought 280 or 290 we would chase it down but I thought the bowlers did a commendable job, they made our life easier. Sri Lanka put up a fight initially, put us under pressure, good partnership with Shreyas, Hardik and Axar, challenging game and be proud the way we fought till the end, just pleasing to finish things off. (On how different the situation was compared to the first game)

21:16 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Match Summary

Sri Lanka lost its momentum with the bat after Kusal Mendis was separated from Nuwanidu Fernando after the pair added 73 runs for second wicket. Kuldeep Yadav picked three wickets in the middle before a lower order resurgence pushed the visitors to a sizeable 215.

Indian openers gave some quick runs in the first six overs before they returned to the dressing room followed by Virat Kohli. Shreyas Iyer showed some intent in the middle before Kasun Rajitha pinned him in front of the stumps on 28.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya joined forces with KL Rahul and the pair forged an impetus stand of 75 runs to put their team ahead in the fight. Hardik was dismissed when
India were still 54 runs away from the win.

Even when Sri Lanka chipped in with some late wickets, victory looked beyond their reach as KL Rahul held his ground firm and reached his fifty in 93 balls. Only a player with a calm mindset can bat like that. Rahul smashed three fours off Kasun Rajitha in the 43rd over to inch India closer to the win before Kuldeep Yadav hit the winning runs.

Rohit Sharma & Co. started their quest for the title with their first series win this year. The third and final ODI will be played on January 15 in Thiruvananthapuram.

21:03 (IST)12 JAN 2023

KL Rahul wields his blade

KL Rahul hit only three fours in 97 balls before the start of 43rd over. He has slammed three fours off Kasun Rajitha in one over as India levelled the scores.

That's how he chose to open his arms after acknowledging his team was in a safer situation.

20:44 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Four!!! Kuldeep Yadav takes his chances to get India past the finishing line as early as possible. A brilliant cut over backward point for a boundary off Lahiru Kumara.

IND 203/6 (42 overs) KL Rahul 52; Chamika Karunaratne 2/51

20:34 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Fifty for KL Rahul

A well deserved fifty for the wicketkeeper-batter as it was played with patience and dogged resistance. Rahul kept the one end intact when Sri Lanka eyed for a batting collapse. Just three fours in this fifty speaks how skillfully he has understood the situation and delved into the art of playing ODI cricket.

20:31 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Axar Patel departs

Dhananjaya de Silva forced Axar Patel to play the loft over extra cover and Karunaratne ran across and slided to take a mind boggling catch.

Axar Patel smashed a boundary on a no-ball offered by Karunaratne in the next over after dismissing Hardik Pandya. Patel moves on the front foot and applies the aerial shot through the cover region for a four.

Karunaratne bowled wide in attempt to bowling a free-hit. When a legal delivery was bowled, Axar deposited that one over the deep mid-wicket for six. 15 runs coming from the 37th over off Chamika Karunaratne.

IND 183/5 (37 overs) KL Rahul 46; Chamika Karunaratne 2/48

20:05 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Chamika Karunaratne ends Hardik Pandya's resistance

Sri Lanka all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne has finally got the breakthrough for his side. He induced Pandya's edge after bowling the length ball outside the off-stump. The batter shuffled across to play the cover drive but found the wood off his bat as Kusal Mendis dived to his right to complete the catch.

India inching closer

A determined stand by Hardik and Rahul has pushed India from strength to strength to inch closer tothe target in a calculative approach.

IND 161/4 (34 overs) KL Rahul 43; Lahiru Kumara 2/54

19:35 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Rahul hitting boundaries to ease the pressure

Four!!! It seems like India will hit more boundaries depending about the quality of bowling. Rahul lofted while using his elbow to play an off-drive for a boundary.

IND 141/4 (29 overs) KL Rahul 37; Lahiru Kumara 2/52

19:28 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Four!!! Rahul hits a boundary and the first one against Hasaranga tonight. He plays the drive through the covers while leaning forward.

19:22 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Why this style?

Perhaps Hardik amd Rahul are waiting for the completion of Hasaranga's full quota of 10 overs in order to switch gears to attacking cricket.

19:20 (IST)12 JAN 2023

The leaders

A staunch mindset by the current vice-captain and the former vice-captain in ODIs. Both have led in IPL and only the experience is helping India move slowly and steadily in the game.

19:05 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Pandya breaks the deadlock

Four!!! After exactly 60 balls, Hardik Pandya smashed India's first boundary. Hardik banked on the overpitched delivery to get a boundary wide of mid-off. The second boundary was flicked with greater conviction through backward square leg.

19:01 (IST)12 JAN 2023

India go past 100

Six singles plundered in the 20th over bowled by Dunith Wellalage. India have managed to cross the three-figure score.

IND 101/4 (20 overs) Shreyas Iyer 28; Lahiru Kumara 2/42

18:51 (IST)12 JAN 2023

The Hasaranga factor

Hasaranga has just conceded 10 runs from his four overs so far. Immaculate. Building the pressure after pacers provided the wickets. India haven't hit a single boundary since the moment he turned to roll his arms.

IND 93/4 (18 overs) Shreyas Iyer 28; Lahiru Kumara 2/42

18:45 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Can Hardik-Rahul pull this one?

A lot for Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul to push forward from here and build a clinical partnership. Axar Patel would be the only recognised batter after this pair. Much in Sri Lanka's control to upset the Indians with one or two wickets here.

18:41 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Sri Lanka were quick to introduce Hasranga in the attack just after the powerplay unlike India waited until 16th over to bosl Kuldeep his first over.

18:36 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Kasun Rajitha traps Shreyas Iyer before the wickets

Rajitha bowled a full with an attempt of a yorker on the middle stump. It struck Iyer's pads and looked as if it was plumb only the DRS showed that the ball was clipping the leg-stump. India didn't lose the review because of umpire's call but lost their fourth wicket.

Shreyas Iyer 28 (33 balls; 5 fours) lbw Kasun Rajitha

18:27 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Shreyas hits Karunaratne for back-to-back fours

Shreyas Iyer looks unstoppable tonight and sends signs of taking up the responsibility. He pulled over mid-wicket for his first boundary against Karunaratne and followed it with another pull that bounced just once before clearing the fence.

IND 79/3 (11 overs) Shreyas Iyer 23; Lahiru Kumara 2/42

18:03 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Gill follows Rohit to dressing room

Gill started the sixth over with a couple of delightful strokes that resulted in boundaries. However, Kumara had the last laugh as Gill went to play his bread and butter shot, the jam pull, and found Avishka Fernando at short mid-wicket.

Karunaratne denies Rohit a dream knock at Edens

17:28 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Mohammed Siraj during the innings break

The Indian openers are out to chase the moderate target. Let's not forget Rohit's fond memories at this venue. Will Indian ease past the chase or Sri Lanka will pull a miracle here. Let's find out as the game progresses.

17:22 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Mohammed Siraj during the innings break

Siraj: The ball wasn’t coming out quick enough, and there wasn’t enough swing. So the plan was to bowl stump to stump to keep the pressure from one end, hoping to get wickets and help the other bowlers. KL told me it stopped swinging after one over, so I switched over to hard lengths. It is a good batting wicket, but Kuldeep bowled very well to cause a middle-order collapse. The outfield is very quick so the message to the batters is just watch and play the ball.

17:02 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Summary of SL innings

Most of the Sri Lankan batters had a great start in their innings but couldn't get to the mile in pursuit of a big score. The 73-run stand between Kusal Mendis (34) and Nuwanidu Fernando (50) was the moment of their innings. Once the Indian spinners were brought into the attack, life became difficult for the visitors as their innings collapsed from 102/1 to 126/6 inside nine overs.

The last five batters contributed 87 runs with the bat, including Lahiru Kumara's naught, as the lower order pushed the score beyond a moderate 200. Siraj (3/30) and Kuldeep (3/51) picked three wickets, while Umran picked a couple of wickets.

16:54 (IST)12 JAN 2023

India bowl out Sri Lanka for 215

If one thought getting Chamika Karunaratne would bring back India into the innings. Kasun Rajitha was another tough nut to crack. Wellalage was too determined to play a big knock to push his side to a convincible total. Both Rajitha and Wellalage led the fightback by tonking fours, be it Kuldeep, Shami or Siraj's searing pace. Wellalage pulled Siraj's short ball over the deep mid-wicket for a six.

Siraj got the wicket of the youngster the very next ball to break the 38-run stand for the ninth wicket. Lahiru Kumara was the last man to be bowled out as Siraj picked three wickets and Sri Lanka's innings bundled up at 215 at 39.4 overs.

SL 215 (39.4 overs) Nuwanidu Fernando 50; Mohammed Siraj 3/30

16:25 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Umran ends Karunaratne's boundary-hitting spree

Chamika Karunaratne hammered a couple of fours in the 34th over bowled by Umran Malik. The pace sensational also conceded one no-ball and Karunaratne punished him for another four.

Umran persisted with the short-of-a-length delivery and the same trick used against Hasaranga worked once again. Karunaratne punched off the backfoot, with Axar putting a dive to his left at the backward point to take the catch.

Chamika Karunaratne 17 (25 balls; 3 fours) c Axar Patel b Umran Malik

16:22 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Boundary for Karunaratne

Four!!! Chamika Karunaratne hopped as the ball poked the inside edge of the bat before racing to the fine leg boundary. Kuldeep put a dive to save some runs for his side but was short on it.

16:14 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Wellalage finds a boundary

Four!!! Dunith Wellalage put Kuldeep's googly past the slip fielder to find his first boundary in the innings. Seems like the young player was very watchful when Hasaranga smashed the Indian spinner.

SL 156/7 (29 overs) Nuwanidu Fernando 50; Kuldeep Yadav 3/38

16:01 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Umran dismiss Hasaranga

Ok, so the spinners step in when batters find the code to outplay the pace and vice versa. Hasaranga clobbered Kuldeep for boundaries in a couple of overs just like he took the attack against Chahal in the previous game. But Umran Malik ruined the Sri Lankan all-rounder's plans to toy with their spinners. A short of a length delivery, which bounced a bit, was enough to push Hasaranga to sky it only to end in the hands of Axar Patel at a backward point. Hasaranga's blitz comes to an end for the second innings in a row.

Wanindu Hasaranga 21 (17 balls; 3 fours and a six)

15:48 (IST)12 JAN 2023

Hasaranga challenges his counterpart

Hasaranga hit Kuldeep for a boundary in the final ball of the 25th over to send a message that Sri Lanka still has his power-hitting services left in their quiver. In the next over, the all-rounder smashed a six and a four on the first two balls. A boundary followed on the fourth ball past the point. Kuldeep finished with two dot balls to concede 14 runs in the 27th over.

SL 149/6 (27 overs) Nuwanidu Fernando 50; Kuldeep Yadav 3/34

Asalanka follows teammates in dug out

Kuldeep returned a catch of his bowling to pick his third wicket of the day. Asalanka chipped one while playing on the back foot, and Kuldeep held it comfortably as Sri Lanka continues with their collapse.
