Best and worst of UFC Sao Paulo: Fighter makes history; controversial draw leaves crowd frustrated

As UFC traveled back to Brazil in Sao Paulo, the company had several top fights ready for the home-crowd. With Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua, iconic Brazilian fighter, former UFC World Champion, as well as UFC Hall of Famer, taking part in the co-main event, and Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza, another Brazilian favorite fighter headlining the event, there was a lot to look forward to from the card.

While the main card was naturally stacked, the Preliminary Card was nothing to sneer at either, with some big fights set to take place at the event, before the top 5 fights even got underway.

The Preliminary Card saw things heat up the always-ready Brazilian crowd, preparing them for what was to come in the rest of the card.

However, while there was a lot of good on the card, there were quite a few negatives as well.

In this article, we will be talking about the best and the worst parts of UFC Fight Night 164 in Sao Paulo. Without any further ado, let's get into it.

#5 Best: Ricardo Ramos' fight win ends Garagorri's undefeated streak

Ricardo Ramos might not be the biggest name in the world of Mixed Martial Arts in the UFC, but he managed to prove himself when it mattered. Going into his fight against Luiz Eduardo Garagorri at UFC Sao Paulo, there was a lot that was on the line, and no one was looking at him as the favorite heading in.

In his sixth fight for UFC, he fought Garagorri and showed that it did not matter if his opponent had an undefeated streak. What he showed was that undefeated streaks did not matter in the world of MMA as anyone can lose at any time.

In the very first round, Ramos took the fight to the ground and wasted no time before taking his opponent's back. Garagorri managed to get back to his feet, but Ramos refused to let go and he sunk in the Rear Naked Choke.

The move was too much for Garagorri, and he was left with no option but to submit.

#4 Worst: The slug-fest that never was

If there was one fight that was not taken well by anyone who saw it on the car, it was the second fight of the main card of UFC Fight Night 164 — Antonio Arroyo vs Andre Muniz.

The fight saw a pause in the very first round as Muniz seemed to land a knee on Antonio Arroyo when his opponent was on the ground. It looked like he might lose a point, but the replay showed that when the knee made contact, Arroyo was not completely on the ground and had his knee off the canvas.

Arroyo was the one to end that round strong with a few shots that saw Muniz rocked and it looked like he would have won had the fight continued for a few more seconds.

However, when the fight resumed it looked like both fighters were far timider and seemed to be completely different from what they had been. It did not take long before the crowd was at their full volume booing them both as they 'fought' to a decision.

#3 Best: Charles Oliveira's win streak continues

The win streak that Charles Oliveira is on at the moment might be absolutely unstoppable. No one has been able to get the better of Oliveira for a long time now.

Not only has the fighter won his last six fights for UFC, but he has also won them in style. Not a single fight has gone to stoppage when he was involved. Over the course of his 37 fights, only 3 of his fights went to decision.

The last six saw four submissions, one TKO, and one KO.

This fight came to an end following an explosive Knockout against Jared Gordon. It only took 86 seconds for him to get the win as Oliveira hit a good right hand followed by a couple of quick uppercuts to get the win.

He now has created history by having second-most finishes in the history of UFC, having finished 15 separate fights for the company.

#2 Worst: Split Draw

The co-main event of the night was one of the better fights to look forward to. Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua did battle against Paul Craig.

However, what no one saw coming was a Split Draw decision.

Rua was not at his best, but what he did display was his staying power. Even though he was taking a beating, it did not look like he was in danger of being knocked out. He took several heavy shots in the fight and the fact that unless he got a stoppage, Shogun would be losing, became clear.

Craig was mostly dominant, although Rua did get some top time in the fight as well. It looked like it would be a narrow win for Craig, but both fighters and the crowd were left disappointed as the judges decided that the fight would actually end in a Split Draw.

#1 Best/Worst:

Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza and Jan Blachowicz showed incredible determination in the main event. Both fighters were slow and not really committing in their attacks against their opponent.

Jan Blachowicz won a few rounds in their 5-round fight with his feet swelling up quite a bit, possibly broken. However, Blachowicz was the one who managed to knock down his opponent in the last round, possibly getting the win with that one knockdown via Split Decision.

While the fact that it was close was interesting, otherwise the fight was very slow.

Blachowicz called out Jon Jones after the fight, and we might be seeing that next for the Light Heavyweight Championship.

Overall, with the exception of the preliminary card and Charles Oliveira's fight, this card was extremely disappointing. Souza was booed out of his own home-town and the draw left a bitter taste for the fans.
