From The UFC Rumor Mill: Amanda Nunes' next possible title challenger revealed
What’s the story?
As per reports suggested by respected MMA reporter Damon Martin, it apparently seems like the UFC is currently planning to book Raquel Pennington as the next challenger for Amanda Nunes’ Bantamweight Championship.
In case you didn’t know…
According to several recent rumors, the original plans for Amanda Nunes were to square off against current UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion Cris Cyborg in a mega Champion vs Champion fight. However, those plans have apparently been nixed due to Cyborg deciding to step in for an injured Max Holloway at the upcoming UFC 222 pay-per-view.
The heart of the matter
Damon Martin recently took to his official Twitter account and claimed that apparently there has been a lot of talks regarding the UFC booking a possible fight between Raquel Pennington and Amanda Nunes for the Bantamweight Championship, in the near future.
Martin wrote in a recent tweet that, some sources have claimed that Amanda Nunes vs. Raquel Pennington is being discussed currently. However, an official date hasn’t been fixed just yet, but, the two women could potentially square off at UFC 224 in Brazil.
Following an injury to Max Holloway, the UFC has seemingly confirmed that Featherweight Champion Cris Cyborg will be defending her championship belt at UFC 222 against UFC’s newcomer Yana Kunitskaya.
Fans might assume that Cyborg’s title fight against Amanda Nunes might be in jeopardy, but, apparently, that is not the case as Cris Cyborg recently wrote on her official Instagram account that she is indeed going to fight Amanda Nunes in July, later this year.
Raquel Pennington has proved herself as one of the strongest contenders at the Women’s 135-pound division and I believe that her upcoming match against 'The Lioness' Amanda Nunes will be her toughest task till date. Nonetheless, the Pennington vs Nunes fight guarantees to be full of excitement.
