Brazilian jiu-jitsu superstar Mikey Musumeci made his first title defense at ONE Fight Night 6 on Prime Video. With his reign ongoing, he still hopes to set up a match with MMA icon Demetrious Johnson in the future.
'Darth Rigatoni' bested Gandumur Bayanduuren via unanimous decision, marking his third straight victory inside the circle. Mikey Musumeci is quickly turning into one of the most well-known grapplers on earth.
After getting his hand raised again, the New Jersey native spoke on a possible matchup with 'Mighty Mouse', stating:
"Oh, yeah, totally. It would be an honor to step in the circle with that legend. It would be an honor. But whoever ONE has in store for me, I'm ready for you know. Let's see who they want me to compete with, you know."
The 26-year-old joins fellow grapplers Danielle Kelly and the Ruotolo brothers in bringing the sport of submission grappling into mainstream focus.
Mikey Musumeci reveals what separates him from other fighters
The four-time IBJJF world champion is proving to be a force inside the circle with each outing. Now 3-0 under ONE's banner, Musumeci owns victories over Masakazu Imanari, Cleber Sousa, and the aforementioned Bayanduuren.
It's clear and obvious that Musumeci isn't just your ordinary jiu-jitsu practitioner. He revealed what separates him from other competitors in an interview with Fightlore:
"I think all the competitors I can be with are amazing, but I think what separates myself is my obsession. I’m never not thinking of jiu-jitsu. Every hour in the day I’m thinking of it. I think that my obsession separates me.”
In addition to his personal career goals, Musumeci has often cited his wish to bring more attention to the sport of submission grappling. There's no doubt that a match against Demetrious Johnson would do just that.
'Mighty Mouse' is currently preparing for his highly anticipated trilogy bout with Adriano Moraes, which is set to take place at ONE Fight Night 10 on Prime Video. The card will mark the promotion's first-ever event in the United States.
