Ariane da Silva’s coach recently revealed that a significant health issue was the reason behind her failure to make weight. Da Silva is set to take on Wang Cong on the preliminary card of UFC 316 this Saturday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. However, the fight was at risk of being canceled during the official weigh-in.

On Friday, 'Queen of Violence' weighed in at 132 pounds, six pounds over the flyweight limit, and was subsequently fined 30 percent of her fight purse. During a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Ariane’s husband and coach, Renato da Silva, explained that the weight-cutting issues stemmed from an inadequate treatment plan for a benign pituitary tumor.

Renato revealed that the 31-year-old Brazilian’s tumor was detected after further examination, which was prompted by abnormal prolactin and cortisol levels found in a blood test during fight camp. Following the diagnosis, they brought in a new nutritionist to carefully manage the weight cut. He said:

"We dicovered a small benign tumor in her pituitary gland that was altering her hormone levels... I know her body. There was still something left there to cut, but at the same time, her reactions weren’t normal. She wasn’t walking right, she was blinking too slow, she had double vision, and couldn’t focus; her voice sounded weak. She was giving us dangerous signs as she dropped weight."

Has Ariane da Silva previously missed weight in the UFC?

Ariane da Silva and Priscila Cachoeira were scheduled to clash at UFC Vegas 59 in August 2022, but the bout was abruptly canceled on the day of the fight.

'Queen of Violence' was ruled medically unfit to compete after coming in 2.5 pounds over the flyweight limit, marking her first weight miss in the UFC. It was later revealed that she had been dealing with a COVID-19 infection during her training camp, which her team believed significantly hindered her ability to make weight successfully.

Da Silva enters UFC 316 on the heels of consecutive defeats—first to Karine Silva, followed by a loss to Jasmine Jasudavicius last year. 'Queen of Violence' has been unable to capitalize on her full potential in the UFC, holding a 6–7 record across 13 octagon appearances.
