Anatoly Malykhin was an unstoppable force throughout his MMA career, carving out a then-perfect 14-0 record overall and 6-0 in ONE Championship.
Carrying an absurd 100 percent finish rate into ONE 169, Malykhin was considered the massive favorite over Kane in the card's headliner.
Things, however, didn't pan out the way Malykhin anticipated. His usual deceptive athleticism was gone, and 'Reug Reug' grabbed the upper hand with his suffocating grappling in the early rounds.
Malykhin tried to rush things in the latter rounds, but the Senegalese grappling machine withstood his terrifying punches against the corner.
Kane's early offense and control ultimately secured him the split decision win and cracked Malykhin's erstwhile perfect slate.
Anatoly Malykhin shares the attitude he has in dealing with adversity
One might think that losing one of his world titles would devastate Anatoly Malykhin, but the Russian superstar never dwelt on the negatives.
In an interview with ONE Championship, Malykhin said he's disappointed with his loss to Oumar 'Reug Reug' Kane, but he'll always take it as a challenge to bounce back from. He said:
"I think tough times are something we create ourselves. I haven’t had any. I’ve always stayed positive — even when I didn’t have money, and now, when I’ve got more opportunities. I’ve always looked at life with a smile."
Malykhin added:
"I always believed things would work out, always worked hard. I never cheated anyone to get ahead. I was happy riding the bus back in the day — and I’m just as happy now driving a Mercedes."
