Daniel Cormier is one of the most popular voices in mixed martial arts media. The UFC Hall of Famer recently shared that he believes that if Alexander Volkanovski is able to defeat Islam Makhachev at UFC 284, it could be the biggest upset in the history of the UFC.

Speaking on his podcast, 3 Rounds with Daniel Cormier, the former double champ stated:

"There have been a number of upsets in mixed martial arts... In my opinion, Volkanovski wins this fight, it's the biggest. It's bigger than anything we've seen because, I'm telling you, when you get into the details of this matchup, it seems a very hard match for Volkanovski to win because his skill set is almost catered for a guy like Makhachev because of Makhachev's ability to stand and also his size."

Cormier continued:

"Volk is a very big guy. Remember, we've spoken ad nauseam about how big he was when he played rugby, but that doesn't matter, he's still shorter. Because he's shorter it makes for him - Makhachev - to use the leverage against Volkanovski. I believe that this would be the biggest upset in mixed martial arts history."

Cormier added that his conclusion has nothing to do with his friendship with the lightweight champion. Makhachev will face Volkanovski at UFC 284, where the featherweight champion will look to become just the fifth double champ in UFC history.

Chael Sonnen disagrees with Daniel Cormier's notion that UFC 284 could produce the biggest upset in UFC history

Chael Sonnen is another former fighter who has had a seamless transition to mixed martial arts media. The former middleweight and light heavyweight title challenger disagrees with Daniel Cormier's notion that Alexander Volkanovski defeating Islam Makhachev would be the biggest upset in mixed martial arts history.

Speaking on his podcast, Beyond The Fight, Sonnen stated:

"Volkanovski who's never lost, Volkanovski who's ranked higher, how would that be shocking news? And if Volkanovski is going to lose, how is he going to lose? If Volkanovski gets beat, not only is that something that's never happened before, any element of that fight that is going to go against Volk will be something that's never happened before."

Volkanovski will look to chase greatness at UFC 284 by becoming a double champ. Despite being the No.1-ranked pound-for-pound fighter, he is currently a heavy betting underdog.
