Eddie Alvarez calls for Nate Diaz fight to settle up an old score

Eddie Alvarez has accomplished a great deal in his legendary MMA career and as he prepares to fight Chad Mendes in a bare-knuckle boxing bout, he has an old score he would like to settle in the future.

While speaking to the media (via BJ Penn) ahead of his BKFC 41 bout with Mendes, the former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion was asked who he would like to fight. He immediately named Nate Diaz and mentioned that the two had an altercation in the past that almost led to a fight.

Alvarez said:

"I confronted him in Mexico City about grilling me and doing some weird little kid bullsh*t and we got into then UFC broke it all up. We never got to hash that out, and I beat up his teammate so I thought after I beat [Gilbert] Melendez that maybe that would warrant a fight against him, but still, he never fought me. So, I think this is the right stagem the right opportunity to get this done." [3:54 - 4:23]

Diaz is currently a free agent and it's no secret that he has been in dialog with other promotions as he evaluates the right situation. 'The Underground King' mentioned that the Stockton native is the only opponent he has the desire to fight, saying:

"I think he'd transition well over to here with that real 'gangster' style or whatever he wants to be. I think it'll do good here and I think that's the only opponent that I would only want to fight. I don't really have a desire to fight anyone besides him." [3:21 - 3:40]

It will be interesting to see whether BKFC will ramp up their pursuit of Diaz should Alvarez earn a decisive win over Mendes.

When did Eddie Alvarez win the UFC lightweight championship?

There was a lot of excitement when Eddie Alvarez joined the UFC in 2014 as he left Bellator after his lightweight championship win over Michael Chandler.

Despite losing his promotional debut to Donald Cerrone, he regrouped and won back-to-back split decision wins over Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis to earn a title shot against then lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night 90.

'The Underground King' made quick work of 'RDA' as he earned a first-round TKO win to become the UFC lightweight champion. The impressive win also earned him a Performance of the Night bonus. However, his title reign was short-lived as he lost to Conor McGregor at UFC 205.
