Islam Makhachev earned first Performance of the Night bonus with win over Charles Oliveira at UFC 280

Islam Makhachev pulled off a sensational submission victory over Charles Oliveira to capture the vacant lightweight gold at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi this past Saturday. With his impressive performance, the Dagestani proved to all the doubters just how good he really is.

Makhachev also took home an additional $50,000 by picking up his first Performance of the Night bonus. It marked the new lightweight champion's second UFC bonus after he secured one courtesy of his FOTN alongside Tsarukyan back in 2019.

Belal Muhammad also picked up a Performance of the Night at UFC 280 thanks to his second-round TKO win over Sean Brady.

In the main event, Makhachev extended his win streak to 11, with his latest victory improving his record to 23-1. The Dagestani now wants to take over the No.1 pound-for-pound spot from featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who seems determined to become the next UFC double champion.

In the post-fight octagon interview, Makhachev and mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov proposed going to Volkanovski’s home country of Australia for a potential superfight at UFC 284 on February 12. 'The Great' was cageside at UFC 280 after weighing-in as a backup opponent for Makhachev vs. Oliveira.
