Islam Makhachev managed to submit Charles Oliveira in the second round at UFC 280 to become the new lightweight champion. The Dagestani looked comfortable during the bout despite fighting such a high-level opponent and imposed his grappling dominance early on. Makhachev finished the bout with 5 minutes and 5 seconds of control time, compared to the Brazilian's 42 seconds of control on the ground.

Alongside his dominant display on the mat, Makhachev also showed his class on the feet. He managed to outland his opponent in both significant and total strikes count during the two rounds of fighting. The new UFC lightweight champion landed a total of 72 strikes, and 30 of them were deemed significant.

Despite Charles Oliveira being known for his excellent striking, the Brazilian only landed just 25 times, out of which 19 were considered significant.

Islam Makhachev didn't need to land many takedowns in order to force Oliveira to tap, converting two out of his three attempts. Oliveira failed to convert his single takedown attempt.

Who did Islam Makhachev call out at UFC 280?

After beating Charles Oliveira in the UFC 280 main event in Abu Dhabi, Islam Makhachev called out Alexander Volkanovski. The Australian is currently the UFC featherweight champion and pound-for-pound number one in the organization.

Volkanovski is 25-1 in professional MMA and unbeaten in the UFC after joining the company in 2016. 'The Great' seems keen to jump-up to the lightweight division in an attempt to become a double champion in the UFC.

UFC 284 will take place at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. This seems like a perfect venue to host the contest and is seemingly in the works. UFC 284 is scheduled for February 12 next year, meaning both fighters would have time to train for the bout.

Robert Whittaker vs. Paulo Costa has already been booked for UFC 284 and could serve as a great co-main event for the potential lightweight title fight.
